International Campaign for Tibet remembers Marvin Hamlisch

You've probably heard that Marvin Hamlisch, a Broadway and film composer best known for musicals like A Chorus Line, died earlier this week. But did you know that Hamlisch was also a dedicated advocate for Tibet?

Hamlisch served on the board of directors for the International Campaign for Tibet from 1995 to 2005, and on its board of advisors until his death on Monday. The ICT released a statement this week, saying, in part:

Marvin's concern and support for the Tibetan people was unwavering and unassuming. In 1989, when the world was just becoming aware of the situation in Tibet, Marvin and his wife Terre, whom he loved dearly, travelled to Dharamsala, India in order to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the first time. Marvin said of that first meeting: "His serenity and graciousness were remarkable, and in many ways he filled us with inspiration. It was an experience I would never forget, and it's made me continually aware of the monumental tragedy of the Tibetans."

Meeting the Dalai Lama inspired Hamlisch to write a song, which he performed when his Holiness was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal Honor in 2007. You can read the full story at the ICT's website.

Celebrate San Francisco Zen Center’s anniversary online this weekend

The San Francisco Zen Center — the subject of a forum discussion in our Fall magazine — is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend, and for those unable to attend, most events will be livestreamed online.

The schedule includes dharma talks from Zentatsu Richard Baker on Saturday and Tenshin Reb Anderson on Sunday, and on Monday, a celebratory procession through San Francisco and a public ceremony at City Center. A full schedule of events is available here. If you're unable to watch live, videos will be available on SFZC's website about an hour after each event. Watching the videos is free, though the center will be accepting donations to support its online endeavors—you can donate here.

The International Campaign for Tibet is mourning the death of Broadway and film composer Marvin Hamlisch, "a long standing and good friend of the Tibetan people." Hamlisch served on the ICT's Board of Directors from 1995 to 2005 and on its Board of Advisors from 2005 until his death. Hamlisch, best known for the musical A Chorus Line, died on Monday. The ICT's statement read, in part:
