Looking at the life of Chögyam Trungpa Posted: 26 Jan 2012 07:02 AM PST Photo (detail) by James Gimian. Used by permission. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche — the great Buddhist teacher who (among many other accomplishments) founded the Shambhala Sun. To mark this, our January 2012 magazine includes "Ocean of Dharma," Barry Boyce's look at the life and work of Trungpa Rinpoche, and we'll be sharing teachings from Rinpoche in the magazine all year. (Look for "A Meditation Instruction," the first of these teachings in our next, March 2012 magazine.) Also remembering Trungpa Rinpoche are our friends at Sounds True, who are offering "When Lightning Strikes," a six-week, online, interactive event series about his life and teachings. It begins on February 15. For information about "When Lightning Strikes," click here. We'll have more details on the next issue of the Shambhala Sun for you soon. In the meantime, why not sample "Ocean of Dharma" here, and browse our special Spotlight page on the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa? Posted: 25 Jan 2012 04:00 PM PST Just because it was there...! I've received several appreciative emails following the long post about Being Good For Others. It really points to, or tries to address, the testing question of 'teaching'. Perhaps more in the informal sense of teaching. Walter very kindly sent in a link to a YouTube video of the last section of Amongst White Clouds a film about hermits in the mountains of China. The ancient monk is grappling with the matter of teaching from ones own experience. He is a humble monk, and he glows. Just watching his face is teaching enough. Thanks Walter, as always. 1991 Wat Promkunaram massacre retrial begins Posted: 25 Jan 2012 03:00 PM PST In 1991, Wat Promkunaram in Waddell, Arizona was shaken by a mass murder — the largest in the state's history — which left six monks, a nun and two temple helpers dead. Two years later, a seventeen-year-old Jonathan Doody was convicted for the crime. He was sentenced to 281 years in prison, based on the testimony of an alleged accomplice and his own confession. In 2010 Doody's conviction was thrown out, however, by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which found that his confession had been coerced. The conviction was again overturned in 2011 when the same court was asked to reconsider the case, sending it back Maricopa County Superior Court for retrial. Doody returned to court on January 24 at Maricopa County Superior Court, where he is now being retried for the slayings; prosecutors will have to make their case without his confession, which his original conviction relied heavily upon.
