Update: Shambhala Mountain Center still in danger from wildfires Posted: 25 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT Photo: John Perkins Shambhala Mountain Center, situated on 600 acres of land in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, continues to face the very real threat of wildfires and is under a red flag warning from firefighters. Efforts have been underway to protect the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya, the most easily salvageable building on the site due to its concrete structure and location. Volunteers removed weeds and brush around the area of the stupa and placed sculptures and other sacred objects inside. John Perkins, a disaster preparation expert for museums, was also sent out by the Shambhala Legacy Project to help with preparations. The fire, the most destructive in Colorado history, has consumed 83,000 acres in the past two weeks and destroyed at least 248 homes. For real-time updates from SMC staff, see their Facebook page. Below is a video of the fire as seen from the center. COMO MEDITAR - 4 de 4This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Ken and Fern McGuire, American Zen teachers, pass away within days of each other Posted: 24 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT
In what might be a case of the widowhood effect, the couple died within two days of one another. Fern died on her 75th birthday on the 22nd in the couple's yard, found lying behind a truck — the suspected cause of death being a heart attack; then it was learned that Ken died this morning some time at their home, also of a suspected heart attack. Buddhadharma News wishes to extend our condolences to the McGuire family and their sanghas. Read More @ SourceNgười Khéo Nói - Thầy. Katherine Sobun Thanas, Abbot of the Santa Cruz Zen Center, dies at 84 Posted: 24 Jun 2012 02:00 PM PDT
Zen teacher Enji Angie Boissevain, a friend, had this to say: "Her continual questioning, continual study, continual opening herself to new truths…her presence…was an immense and precious teaching for me. Katherine was famous for her strict practice, and for her great great warmth and generosity. Her dedicated life was a gift." As we reported earlier in the week, Thanas suffered a serious head injury and was found in her home by a friend on Monday. She slipped in to a coma and was soon after taken off life support, returning to her home with hospice care, where she was surrounded by friends and sangha members. For remembrances by those who knew her and a biographical sketch, please see the Sweeping Zen article published today.
