Battle on to reclaim Bhuddhamonthon Buddhist Park

Occupying more than 2,500 rai of land, the park is seen as an icon of Thai Meditation and attracts thousands of worshippers on holy days for candle-lit processions around the Giant Buddha Statue.

"We are responding to the initiative of HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and HRH Princess Srirasmi who wish to see the park restored as a centre of religious and traditional activities," said Nakhon Pathom deputy governor Nimit Jantarawimon.

More than 200 soldiers and volunteers yesterday began cleaning the area around the Giant Buddha Statue after flood waters receded. However, most parts of the park remain inundated, with underground electric cables and large trees suffering serious damage. Officials estimate a recovery bill of well over Bt500 million, while efforts to salvage the park must begin immediately if its trees are to survive.

"The government and the private sector will join hands for efforts to pump flood water out of the park," Nimit said.

He said the water would be drained into canals so as to prevent impacting local communities.

"We expect the operation to be completed before year-end."

National Office of Meditation director Nopparat Benjewattananan said relevant authorities were asked to quickly drain flood water out of local communities into the Tha Chin River first.

"Then we can pump water out of Bhuddhamonthon Buddhist Park without affecting local residents," he said.

As of yesterday, flood water on the nearby Bhuddha Monthon IV Road was still between 40 and 50 centimetres deep. The beautiful road in front of the park was also flooded and remained impassable to small vehicles.

Nakhon Pathom and Bangkok were among several provinces ravaged by the worst flooding in decades this year.

Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency director Anond Snidvongs said yesterday that the volume of run-off water into Bangkok's western zone had reached a historic high this year.

"We will need to plan long-term solutions for the future," he said.

Anond assured everyone that the worst of the flood crisis had passed.

Today sees the launch of an exhibition on the courage and compassion shown by Thais during the crisis. Organised by the Culture Ministry, "Water+Empathy 2011" at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre comprises 213 photographs that depict both the severity of the disaster and the flow of help for victims in response.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over the opening ceremony of the exhibition at 5pm today.

Photo Gallery: Tibetan artist sculpts Arya Tara in Pomona

POMONA - Kalsang Lodoe Oshoe has spent close to two months on Park Avenue working on a statue of Arya Tara, a female Buddha who represents compassion.

Oshoe is sculpting the clay statue at the Land of Enlightened Wisdom, a small monastery in the 1300 block of North Park.

Oshoe, a Tibetan master sculptor and painter, has worked around the world, including United States academic institutions and museums such as the Smithsonian and has completed works commissioned by the Dalai Lama.

In 1993, he sculpted a 12-foot-tall statue of Arya Tara for a monastery in northern India, said Geshe Tenzin Sherap, a monk and teacher at the Land of Enlightened Wisdom.

Oshoe, who comes from a family of artists, was trained by his father and older brother to carry on the tradition of Tibetan fine arts, Sherap said.

The statue that Oshoe is creating for the Land of Enlightenment will be the first one of the deity that he is sculpting in the U.S.

Tara, as she is also referred to, was once a princess who vowed that every time she was reincarnated it would be as a woman, Sherap said.

Tara guides and protects people.

"She purifies the poisonous" and protects people from danger, he said, and great masters and scholars pray to her.

Her gestures, Sherap said, indicate she will lead people to happiness and guide them to wisdom and knowledge.

Tara helps people control emotions such as anger and jealousy.

The 3-foot-and-3-inch sculpture is being created to exact specifications that date back to the first Dalai Lama who lived in the 1400s, Sherap said.

Within the statue are scrolls containing mantras, including one from the current Dalai Lama, Sherap said.

Oshoe said the statue is nearly complete and is in the process of adding a few details.

On Wednesday, Oshoe used a thin, pencil-like wooden tool to carefully shape some of Tara's features removing tiny pieces of clay to achieve just the right look.

Once Oshoe is done with the sculpting portion of the process he will move on to the next step.

The next step involves painting the sculpture and finally painting the sculpture's face and other exposed parts of her body with powdered gold and then covering the rest of the statue with a gold leaf.

Once the statue is completed the sculpture will be moved to the monastery's shrine room, Sherap said.

Later this month, Sherap and other monks will gather to have a special ceremony

asking Tara to bless the statue.

Through a translator, Oshoe said even if someone doesn't practice Buddhism, seeing Tara's statue will be a positive experience.

Seeing her may remind someone that they knew of her in a previous life, Oshoe said.

That may inspire someone to learn more about her.

"If you study she definitely helps you," Sherap said.

This Saturday and Sunday , Oshoe will conduct a workshop at the Land of Enlightened Wisdom where he will share his knowledge of sculpture and work with participants in the creation of a Mahakala mask.

The workshop costs $ 55, which includes the cost of materials.

For registration information, visit www.landofenlightenedwisdom.org and click "Mahakala Mask Workshop."

India police charge Tibet holy man in money probe

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

DHARMSALA, India (AP) — Indian authorities have filed charges against Tibetan Buddhism's third most important leader following an investigation into $ 1.35 million in cash discovered at his headquarters in northern India, police said Thursday.

The money was found last January during a police raid on the Karmapa's monastery. It was in nearly two dozen currencies, and the Karmapa's aides said it had been donated by his followers, who came from all over the world.

But the amount of cash, which included a large sum of Chinese yuan, concerned police, who said the sums were too large to be merely from donations.

The raid on the Gyuto Monastery was unprecedented and particularly surprising since the Karmapa, Ugyen Thinley Dorje, is revered by Tibetans and Buddhists. India has gone to great lengths to provide asylum to Buddhist leaders who have fled Tibet, including the Dalai Lama.

The Karmapa, 26, is seen as one of the Dalai Lama's potential successors as the leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

On Wednesday, police filed charges against the Karmapa and three of his followers in a local court at the end of the investigation, said Sumedha Diwedi, a superintendent of police.

The court will soon examine the evidence submitted by the police and decide whether the Karmapa and his followers should be tried on the charges.

A spokesman for the Tibetan government-in-exile said he was sure no Indian laws had deliberately been broken.

"What resulted was due to negligence on part of the staff members of the Karmapa," Thupten Samphal told The Associated Press. "It is also a case of ignorance of the Indian law. Now that the case is on, law should take its own course."

The Karmapa's office later said it had cooperated fully and provided the authorities with complete details and documents pertaining to the case.

"At no point of time His Holiness was ever called or examined by the investigating agency," the statement from the office said. "His Holiness has no involvement, direct or indirect, in the financial administration of the office or trust."

The statement said the next course of action would be decided after the court decided on the charge-sheet filed by police.

While the Karmapa was charged with conspiracy and knowledge of undeclared money, the three followers face the additional charges of cheating and forgery of documents. If convicted, the Karmapa faces up to two years in prison, and his followers up to 10 years.

Diwedi said police have also sought the permission of the federal government to prosecute the Karmapa and the followers for allegedly violating India's foreign currency laws in collecting the donations.

The Karmapa left Tibet in 2000. Since then, he has been living at the monastery in Sidhbari, just outside Dharmsala, which has been the headquarters of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile since the Dalai Lama fled the Himalayan region in 1959.

China's government reviles the Dalai Lama, accusing him of pushing for independence for Tibet and sowing trouble there. A boy named by the Dalai Lama in 1995 as the second-highest Tibetan spiritual leader, the Panchen Lama, disappeared shortly afterward, and China selected another boy.

Tibetan refugees doing brisk business of woollen garments in Andhra

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 10:00 PM PST

Vishakhapatnam, Dec 8 (ANI): The onset of winters and sudden dip in temperature is proving to be a boon for the Tibetan refugees settled in Orissa as they are doing brisk business of woollen garments in Andhra Pradesh and earning good profit.

The refugees have arrived from 'Tibetan refugees settlement' in Orissa to Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Kakinada and Vijayawada city to earn their livelihood.

The Tibetan refugees expressed happiness and said that this year winters are colder as compared to last year as there has been surge in the sale of woollen clothes.

"We are Tibetan refugees and we stay in a camp in Orissa, in a Tibetan refugees settlement. Every year, we come here and do business during the four months of winter season and then we return to our home in Orissa. As compared to last year, the weather is colder this year, because of good rains. And we have raised the price of clothes because of rise in the transport rate, petrol rate, housing rent and vegetables as well. But still people are purchasing," said Namgyal, a Tibetan refugee.

Around 150 families set up their stalls and are selling sweaters, shawls, stoles, pullovers and sports jackets, in varieties and various colours.

The refugees said that on an average, each stall owner gets a business of rupees 1,000 per day.

The local residents, however, said that the prices are high and added that there was no scope of bargaining.

"The clothes are good but the rates are high and the clothes are being sold at the same price on all the stalls. There is no scope of bargaining," said Prasanna Kumar, a resident. (ANI)

Zen Garden Design

Zen Garden Design

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 01:01 PM PST

Article by Jeff Halper

Zen gardens are very unique landscaping designs that are also known as "Japanese Rock Gardens.". The word "Zen" means "dry" and the Japanese word for this type of garden is karesansui, meaning dry landscape. Consisting almost exclusively of stones and sand, this type of garden became very popular in Japan during the Shogun era (1185-1573AD), when feudal lords sought to landscape their estates in emulation of Buddhist temples. Monks frequently used such gardens to represent complex Universal truths in simple forms, and they frequently used them as places of meditation to calm and clear their minds.

Although American popular culture commonly refers to anything that looks Japanese or Eastern as a "Zen garden," a true karesansui never contains water. Instead, it uses gravel and sand to symbolize water. Usually the gravel is white or near white in coloration, although this is not a hard-fast rule in landscaping. The reason that sand and gravel are used as water substitutes is because they can be intricately sculpted in ways that water cannot. Using only a rake, a landscaper can depict ripples, sea waves, rushing rivers, or still, quiet lakes. Every so often, the gardener will alter these patterns to reflect the Buddhism belief that the only thing constant in the Universe is change itself. Even those things that appear to be the most fixed of forms are slowly being altered by unseen forces all around us. In many Buddhist temples even to this day, monks remind themselves of this truth by raking the sand in their Zen gardens while they meditate, seeking a still mind in the perfection of linear form, and creative insight in curved patterns of motion that wrap harmoniously around alternating forms.

In most Zen gardens, rocks take the place of vegetation. This is another aspect of their design that makes these landscapes highly unique. Stones carefully placed in the sand create focal points in the endless fluidity that surrounds them, allowing an infinite variety of wave forms to accent ! their st ructure and positioning. Buddhist monks, long before Einstein, understood the relationship between matter and energy. The interplay of sand and stone directly reflects this relativistic relationship with a set of simple, natural symbols that are easy to work with and peaceful to behold. The relationship between light sand and dark stone is another important symbolic element, and directly correlates to the concepts of yin and yang. It must be emphasized that black is NOT a symbol of evil in the Eastern World, but instead represents the receptive elements of the mind. In a similar way, white has nothing at all to do with our moral concept of good. It symbolizes the mind's ability to express itself through intentional action. The careful placement of darker stones in lighter sand (or vice versa) is therefore never intended to represent a clash of opposites. Instead, it is meant to represent the dual nature of the mind as it perceives reality through contemplation, then acts upon it through intention.

One famous Japanese text even goes so far as to state that the most important element of Zen gardening is the placement of stones. The text goes on to say that rocks should always be positioned where the most attractive side faces the viewer. It also states emphatically that there should be a greater number of horizontal stones (or "chasing stones" as they are called in Japan) than there are vertical stones (called "running stones" in the text). Again, this helps emphasize the rising force of intent coming up from the depths of the mind. Intent is mystery in Buddhism, but its effects are clearly evidenced by action.

The philosophical function of rocks is complimented on the practical level practical level by decoratively arranging them to represent objects that are commonly found in Nature. Ancient Japanese texts on the subject recommend creating such features as mountains, lakes, seashores, rivers, and cliffs out of rocks of varying sizes. The only vegetation typically found in an authentic Ze! n garden is moss, which is trained to grow over rocks in emulation of forests growing along river banks, lakeshores, and mountainsides covered in forests. Very small shrubs are used at times to frame a Zen garden, but only as a perimeter element, and seldom, if ever, as a central one.

Alan Watts speaks on Zen

Alan Watts speaks on the unspeakable The Flower Sermon The origins of Zen Buddhism are ascribed to the Flower Sermon, the earliest source for which comes from the 14th century.[5] It is said that Gautama Buddha gathered his disciples one day for a Dharma talk. When they gathered together, the Buddha was completely silent and some speculated that perhaps the Buddha was tired or ill. The Buddha silently held up and twirled a flower and twinkled his eyes; several of his disciples tried to interpret what this meant, though none of them were correct. One of the Buddha's disciples, Mahākāśyapa, silently gazed at the flower and broke into a broad smile. The Buddha then acknowledged Mahākāśyapa's insight by saying the following:[5] I possess the true Dharma eye, the marvelous mind of Nirvāṇa, the true form of the formless, the subtle Dharma gate that does not rest on words or letters but is a special transmission outside of the scriptures. This I entrust to Mahākāśyapa. Thus, through Zen there developed a way which concentrated on direct experience rather than on rational creeds or revealed scriptures. Wisdom was passed, not through words, but through a lineage of one-to-one direct transmission of thought from teacher to student. It is commonly taught that such lineage continued all the way from the Buddha's time to the present.

How to Use Your Subconscious Mind Productively

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

Article by John Stewart

It is possible to use your subconscious mind productively if you train it properly by feeding proper thoughts from the conscious mind. Hard work is a must to realize goals set by it.

Mind is the storehouse of your life experiences, desires and emotions put out by the conscious mind. It is like an elephant asleep within you since it is much more powerful than the conscious mind. You should know how to tap into your mind power. Write as goals what you want to achieve into your subliminal mind. Then results will emerge but not automatically. Massive hard work is necessary from your side to realize these goals. In fact whatever your conscious mind sees, feels, believes and thinks is sent to your subconscious mind. It then creates a picture of the things that have to be done to realize in practice of what you have dreamt or imagined. You have to use the subconscious mind power to realize those dreams. It is the modern medical feeling that most of the diseases start in the mind. Knowing how to use the power of the mind you would not fall sick in the first place. It is the view that scientists have held that we go through our lives by utilizing only 10% of our conscious or mind power. Hence knowing how to utilize even a small fraction of the mind in the right manner can solve many of our problems.

To utilize your subconscious mind power effectively first of all you have to change your thoughts in the conscious mind, create in it faith and beliefs, strive so that it develops a positive attitude of seeing things without any bias, make it realize how important it is to send right information to the mind. Conscious mind thus transfers its thoughts and mental pictures to the subliminal mind and frees itself to view fresh situations. With such a training of the subliminal mind, it constructs a frame of structure for you to set the right goals for you. Then it is your duty to work hard to give a shape to those goals. The mind power is usually tapped by silence and meditation. By such repeated train! ing of t he conscious or subconscious mind, right thinking becomes more of a habit, which acts as reinforcement to realize goals.

You should stay perfectly focused in your actions to realize the goals set by your subconscious mind no matter how hard the situation is. This way you can use your subconscious mind power to your advantage.

Relaxation Techniques for anxiety

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

Article by We provide renewing your hope,meditation,new beginning,relaxationtechniques,relaxation meditation,meditation for beginners,spiritual meditation,relaxation techniques for anxiety,calming techniques,spi

To relax first, it is important to understand what is anxiety and where does it set off from. Anxiety in simple terms is the state of being anxious. Anxious is nothing but worry and worry comes from thoughts. Thoughts come from our psychic impressions that are stored within us in the subconscious mind that is the accumulation of experiences from so many lifetimes. So, when anxiety strikes what usually happens is the panic button is hit and then there is a vicious cycle of more worries thus triggering more anxiety and so on.

Understanding anxiety is the first step to cure it. It can be cured by none other than the self. Medications and counseling help only to a certain degree but it still does not address the root cause of the anxiety. That is why relaxation helps a great deal because during relaxation the thoughts causing anxiety are not active. That is why you never get anxiety when you are asleep because the mind is in deep relaxation mode. This relaxation can be consciously obtained by many methods such as meditation, positive contemplation, and prayer, being in nature like walking on a beach, splashing the water, walking on grass or simply gazing at the beauty of nature. All these connect you with something calm and soothing and fix you into the relaxation mode.

It should be known that when you notice the first symptom of anxiety, which is usually a confusion of the mind, irritation, sweating, racing heart beat, confused behavior, etc, the first thing to be aware of is that you have triggered something that lies within you in the form of fear. The moment this gets triggered the body reacts to the situation (even if it is safe) as a threat and then begins anxiety and the anxious thoughts. With awareness that you have triggered an underlying fear in some way, the first thing to do should be to relax. You will be able to relax only if you understand that there is nothing actually threatening but it is an unresolved thing that you have somehow triggered. So, when you relax with this g! reat und erstanding you will notice your anxiety starting to subside. Remind yourself constantly there is nothing to be worried about and get into relaxation mode. When the mind starts relaxing to a trigger of anxiety, the mind starts retraining this pattern and slowly just as a thought created the anxiety, the anxiety will create a relaxing mind. All this would depend on how strongly you train your mind repeatedly to do this. Eventually, if you are strong willed to reprogram your mind with relaxation, you notice that you would be slowly able to conquer anxiety

About the Author

The best practice is that instead ofrelaxing when anxiety strikes, why not relax oneself in every task and moment of life. This training of learning to relax in life regularly would be the greatest prevention from anxiety then waiting for it to happen and trying to cure it.

Whose Goals Are You Really Chasing?

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

Do you have a big goal for the next year – or perhaps a three-year or five-year plan? You might have a whole bunch of goals, even if you don't call them that – perhaps ranging through things like:
  • Lose weight
  • Make lots of money
  • Get a promotion
  • Study for a new qualification
Stop reading for a moment, and think about some of the goals that are currently lodged in your mind – they might be things you've told yourself you "should" do, but you've not made much progress on them. You may want to write them down.

Whose goals are these?

Perhaps that seems like a stupid question: obviously, they're your goals ... aren't they?

Unfortunately, there's a fair chance that some of "your" goals aren't really yours at all. They might belong to your parents, your friends, or even your society as a whole.

Here's how other people's goals can become yours – and why you want to take control again.
  • #1: Your Parents' (or Family's) Goals
Naturally enough, parents often have big hopes and dreams for their kids. They may have struggled through hardship and made sacrifices in order to support their children – and they might have ideas about what constitutes a "good" career or a valuable life.

Parents (or other relatives) may impose goals by:
    • Insisting that a particular activity isn't worth pursuing because "there's no money in it" – perhaps art, writing or music
    • Focusing on certain qualifications and career paths – perhaps wanting their children to become doctors or lawyers
    • Encouraging a particular type of lifestyle by criticizing behavior that they consid! er "wron g"
    • Talking about the success of certain family members in terms of career, wealth, marriage, etc...
How to Change: Spend some time digging deep into your own goals. What do you really want for yourself? If you're pursuing a degree or career that you dislike, don't be afraid to change to something new. Your family may well turn out to be more supportive than you expect.

  • #2: Your Friends' Goals
Among groups of friends, it's common for particular traits to spread. For instance, if your friends are all overweight, there's a good chance that you'll be overweight too.

One recent and dismaying example of this trend is for breast enhancements, with women feeling pressured into following their friends into having surgery.

Your friends might not talk about their goals as such. But they probably have a set of things that they value – and it may be hard for you to identify your own values. For instance, if you work with colleagues who just care about the paycheck, you might find it tough to stick to what's important to you: doing a good job and playing a valuable role in society.

How to Change: Consider joining a group or club that relates to one (or more) of your goals. For instance, if you're starting up your own business but all your friends are traditionally-employed, you could look for small business networking opportunities in your area.

  • #3: Your Society's Goals
Family and friends aren't the only people whose goals you might have unwittingly adopted. Society as a whole can impose certain goals on you – ones that may not be what you want at all.

Big companies have an interest! in maki ng sure you think of certain things as important or even essential. They encourage you to adopt goals that mean purchasing their products. For instance, you might end up buying gym membership or diet products because you feel like you "should" get in shape – even though you're already pretty healthy.

If you find yourself thinking that's just the way it is or everyone knows that, try questioning your assumptions.
    • Is it really better to buy a house, or would you be just as happy renting?
    • Will that new gadget/TV/game really enhance your life?
    • Do you need a new car?
    • Do you and your spouse really want to have a pricey meal out on Valentines' day, or are you both just doing it because you feel like you should?
Some of society's goals and priorities might well be in tune with your own. Others won't.
  • How to Change: Don't be afraid to be different! There are plenty of ways you can challenge the assumptions of society – that might mean living frugally, homeschooling your kids, avoiding designer labels, or whatever else you want to do.

You only have one life to live: your own. Don't waste years of it chasing other people's goals. Take the time to decide what you want, and go after it wholeheartedly.

Stress Reduction Advice

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST

Article by John Furnem

It is a well known fact that sports and regular workout help the body and the mind deal with stress, in some cases people are using daily workouts to get rid of the excess stress that they accumulated during the day. Solving stress problems by regularly working out and exercising is highly recommended, it is not only a good way of fighting stress but also a great way of improving fitness and health.

The problem for most people is that there is not enough time for a daily activity on their busy day schedule, most people simply do not have the time to workout on a daily basis. Some people try and fight stress by doing a daily walk or a short exercise and then realize they could not keep doing that every day, what happens next is that they give up the whole idea and go back to living the same life as they had before with the same stress levels, only know they are not even thinking of fighting the stress since they believe they do not have the time to reduce it.

There is an answer for these people, and there is an option of reducing stress on a regular basis, but not a daily one, that is absolutely possible to maintain for a long period of time and that is both enjoyable and healthy. The first thing is to think of a fun activity in the outdoors, do not lock yourself up in you home or in a gym, the reason for that is that you should take the opportunity and distance yourself from all the familiar places, creating a place of calm and focus for yourself.

Think about how much time you do have and how much would you give in order to try and fight stress and than create a time slot in which you are totally dedicated to performing some kind of stress reducing activity. Among some great ideas for a periodic outdoor activity that relives stress are hiking and camping, this can be done every two weeks, it does not need special skills or knowledge, spending one night in nature and in the outdoors, away from computers and the noise of traffic may reduce stress significantly, if this is done on ! a regula r two week basis it is even better.

Hiking is also a good activity for reliving stress, set yourself a route and objectives like a short break for a snack or for some photography, set clear targets and try and get them all, stay focused on the hike and do not treat the hike like a stroll down the street, if you will stay focused on the target you will probably enjoy the activity much more. The time spent in the outdoors is one of the things that will contribute to lowering the stress in your life, enjoy nature and participate in an activity that will occupy both body and mind, and by doing something that is completely on the now and the present you will free yourself of stress.

Buddhist Guided Meditation

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Article by Rasmus Lindgren

Buddhist Guided Meditation is perhaps the purest and time-honored form of classic meditative practice. You may be wondering, though, as to why you should make Buddhist meditation a part of your life.Buddhist meditation is essentially an everyday practice that serves to purify both the mind and the soul. Clearing your being of turmoil and torment, this age-old custom-much like the religion that inspired it--can both calm and enlighten you. By meditating in the Buddhist fashion, you can reach a state of happiness and purity, both spiritually and physiologically. The goal of restoring inner peace is always important to the Buddhist meditator, who likely will entail many purposes and positions to discover their ideal meditation style. Each meditator must decide for him/herself when, where and how, and most importantly the why. Moreover, each meditator must determine his/her individual goals. Every individual meditates for slightly different reasons; the decision to meditate is in itself a highly personal choice, one that can change your life.Yet regardless of what those goals happen to be, the benefits of Buddhist meditation are many and common among those who practice it.Those who practice Buddhist meditation are, for the most part, more relaxed and serene. They are happier, healthier people with a greater degree of focus and concentration, and are even known to be more honest and just.People who wish to improve all of these aspects of your life, and others, should explore the possibility of making Buddhist meditation an integral part of their daily schedules. Soon meditation may come as naturally to them as eating or sleeping, and actually has many of the same benefits.Of course, to reap all of these wonderful benefits, you must pay special heed to the "guided" part of Buddhist Guided Meditation. You can't dive headfirst into the meditative practice, taking a casual attitude toward what is essentially a time-honored practice. Meditation is not a quick fix, and it is not to be taken lightly.Just as yo! u would study for a big test, so you must prepare yourself for the process and practice of Buddhist meditation. You must read about Buddhist theory, taking in its subtleties and its rich, beautiful intricacies. You must examine the positions and techniques that define the art of Buddhist meditation. You must pick and choose carefully among these many theories and positions, choosing the ones that are best for you. This may sound like a lot of work, and you may be tempted at this point to abandon the cause. Don't. As you'll soon find out, the work will be worth it.Discover Buddhist Guided Meditation today; and open your world to a brighter tomorrow.

Black Ants and Buddhists

What would a classroom look like if understanding and respecting differences in race, culture, beliefs, and opinions were at its heart? Welcome to Mary Cowhey's Peace Class in Northampton, MA, where first and second graders view the entire curriculum through the framework of understanding the world, and trying to do their part to make it a better place.

Woven through the book is Mary's unflinching and humorous account of her own roots in a struggling large Irish Catholic family and her early career as a community activist. Mary's teaching is infused with lessons of her heroes: Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Keller, Martin Luther King, and others. Her students learn to make connections between their lives, the books they read, the community leaders they meet, and the larger world.

If you were inspired to become a teacher because you wanted to change the world, and instead find yourself limited by teach-to-the-test pressures, this is the book that will make you think hard about how you spend your time with students. It offers no easy answers, just a wealth of insight into the challenges of helping students think critically about the world, and starting points for conversations about diversity and controversy in your classroom, as well as in the larger community.

Healing Mind And Soul With Aromatherapy

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 07:01 AM PST

Article by John Michelcane

Flowers make our heart rejoice, rejuvenate and delight us in an astounding way. The sight of a well-trimmed garden lined with colorful flowers in bloom soothes our mind and seeps in warm energy into our body. The fragrance of the flowers-in-bloom filling up the spring breeze is bound to successfully drain away stress and anxiety in our lives. The fragrance of flowers brings in so much of optimism and sparkle in our otherwise daily and dull life. Owing to these universally experienced aspects of fragrances, the popularity of aromatherapy is growing worldwide and has led to a wide acceptance of aromatherapy. It is considered as a recommended method in the holistic approach of therapeutic, restorative and curative science.

The science of aromatherapy is an ancient practice that traces back to the former period of human civilization. In this form of natural therapy, natural oils extracted from flowers, barks of trees, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant are used to alter a person's mood, cognitive functions or health. This treatment is a part of alternate medicine that refrains from the use of chemical compounds and carries minute side-effects or toxins. Although scientific evidences are yet to prove the benefits of aromatherapy on the overall physiological and biochemical functions of the body, the influence of aroma on the brain, especially the limbic system through the olfactory system, is undeniable.

According to a research study carried out by Ohio State University, lemon oil aroma is believed to enhance a person's mood and act as a good mind-relaxant. To name further examples, tea tree exhibits excellent anti-microbial properties and hence is widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases. Similarly, lavender oil shows excellent remedial properties in reducing insomnia and migraine.

These oils are highly concentrated forms of the plant extracts. Aromatherapy treatment oils can be inhaled, massaged onto the body, sprinkled in bath tubs or shower, burned or spra! yed appr opriately. Today, the rapid increase in the number of spas and other health centers in every nook and corner of the world is testament to the fact that aromatherapy has huge followers. Some of the most commonly used plant oils include:

* Geranium

* Tea tree

* Lavender

* Cedar wood

* Lemon

* Chamomile

* Eucalyptus

* Rosemary

Each of the above oils has a unique treatment purpose and quality. So if you are interested in using aromatherapy for your overall well-being, it is best to consult a professional aroma therapist. For instance, people who have high blood pressure should avoid rosemary, sage and thyme oils.

Because of its amazing soothing effect, this holistic treatment has a proven track record of being a potent solution in relieving stress and depression. Aromatherapy undoubtedly is a great look at healthy living-a reason to appreciate the gift of life. Do away your stress and emotional anomalies with a dab of your favorite aroma!

Consciousness is beyond matter

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Neuroscience is not without the smell of triumphalism first, that it assumes that consciousness and the brain are one and the same thing which adds up to matter; next, that what neuroscience cannot explain about consciousness doesn't really exist in the first place.  It's mumbo-jumbo.

However, the scientific notion of 'matter' may have some problems as we shall see.  Matter as physical stuff, which neuroscience generally supposes is the basis of the brain and therefore consciousness, is generally recognized to mean a particular mass that occupies space.  On the same track, and with circular reasoning, mass is considered to be the quantity of matter!  (So much for any profound truth here.)

Supposedly things like a piano or a human brain are material things composed of matter (you could even say matters).  This means they are made up of different grades of matter until we reach the limit of matter, itself, which is massless and space-like.  We may also add that the limit of matter, which besides being massless and space-like, is not subject to gravity; does not generate gravity, is not particulate, exhibits no inertia, etc.

Stopping here, are we not permitted to think that maybe 'consciousness' is the limit of matter, also, which means that consciousness is massless, space-like, etc.?  This is intended to suggest that the massless, space-like field upon which matter sits, including our brain, is real and is maybe who we really are.  Moreover, it is something that neuroscience has no means to either substantially grasp or to understand.  So they just ignore the problem of limit and what is beyond it.  In Buddhism we don't.

How much this helps our understanding of traditional Zen, which is about the realization of Buddha Mind, is probably very little.  But if we decide to buy Zen marketed through Zen teachers who embrace neuroscience like the Upaya Institute and Zen Center, then it becomes important.

We cannot realize the Buddha Mind or Buddha Consciousness by believing the neuroscience dogma that there is no distinction to be made between consciousness and neural activity.  This would mean that we are only brains.  When these brains finally crap out, experiencing pain, that's it.  We have it on good authority from pop Zennists and neuroscientists/neurobiologists that we shall, after we die, never become brains again.  It was by accident that we became brains in the first place.  However, if we are intrinsically massless and space-like—heaven forbid!—we could tune into another brain!

Relax - It's Safe For You to Prosper!

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Article by Timothy Aaron Whiston

This article is dedicated to those good people who deserve to prosper but are afraid to do so. If you are someone who always seems to struggle with money, even when there doesn't appear to be a good reason for doing so, you may find this article enlightening.

Are you always struggling to get by with less money than you need to meet your bills and put food on the table? And has your life been this way for as long as you can remember?

Do you notice even when external circumstances seem ideal your financial reality remains predictably bleak? Have you found that things can be lined up perfectly for a new job, a winning business deal, or some other form of cash windfall, only to completely fall apart at the last minute?

If you answered yes, please take a minute to carefully consider this next question. Clear your mind, relax, and prepare to be completely honest with yourself on this very important matter.

When you think about receiving ,000 tax-free right now, how do you feel? Seriously imagine I am about to just hand you the money and assess how you really feel about that.

Maybe you got excited. Maybe you felt legitimate joy and expansion.

Or, it's possible that a knot formed in your stomach. You could have noticed instant tension in your shoulders and a feeling of confusion, or even dread.

Did you experience these or other negative feelings and physical sensations? It's really important that you are honest with yourself when answering this question.

If you felt absolutely fabulous when visualizing your newfound prosperity that's good. In fact you might not even need to finish this article because it likely does not apply to you.

However, if you noticed a reflexive and negative reaction to the mere thought of receiving a healthy dose of money it means you probably have deeply rooted fears of change and success. Here are a couple of other qualifying questions for you:

Whenever you are close to receiving a big check – like maybe a tax ref! und – o r some other form of financial relief like a pay raise at work, do you ever experience a strange sense of guilt or worry? When you might expect yourself to be overjoyed and excited about making financial progress, do you instead become disconnected, irritable, and even depressed?

The fact is many people have this experience. You are not alone, and you are absolutely not crazy or deranged.

If you can honestly identify these feelings, the fact is you have made an enormous leap in your personal development. Most people never admit to feeling sad, frightened, or otherwise upset by the idea of receiving money and/or financial abundance.

And yet it's probable that millions of people suffer from a very real fear of prosperity. How and why can this be?

For one thing, plenty of money is a big change for people who are used to struggling and scraping by. You may not be happy living in poverty, but at least it's normal and familiar to you; drastic change in this area of your life can easily be scary or unpleasant.

Consider that over 80% of lottery winners (and nearly 100% of winners who came from serious poverty) lose all of their jackpot money on average within just two years. These people are shell shocked by the change and will blow their cash on just about anything to get back to a "normal", comfortable feeling.

Also, there is the issue of being worthy or unworthy. You may very well not feel like you deserve to have more than enough money to pay your bills, have fun, and even help others with your excess cash flow.

It's important to recognize that whatever the specific cause of your fear and discomfort about financial success, as long as you feel this way it will be virtually impossible to have plenty of money in your life. You'll keep finding unconscious ways to sabotage yourself, or you'll simply scare the energy of money away from you on a consistent basis.

So how can you change? How can you stop being scared of prosperity?

You've already started.! By simp ly acknowledging this issue you have opened the door to releasing it.

There are many good methods for building your positive prosperity consciousness. But your first step is to simply be aware of your fears and discomforts; catch yourself being upset when you think about having plenty and sit with the thoughts and feelings until they subside.

Begin to affirm to yourself that it's completely safe for you to have more than enough. Look at people who have plenty of money and tell yourself quite honestly that you are as good and smart as those folks. Smile as you think about money; enjoy the way paper money feels in your hands and love the way it smells.

As you begin to change how you feel about money you'll literally be inviting more of it to enter your life. Within a few short months your financial life can be completely renewed if you continue to release your fears and come to believe that is both safe and good for you to have more than enough prosperity in your life.

Most people do not understand why they require a meditation cushion.

Here are some reasons to convince you why a meditation cushion is so important to you when meditating:

Some of the common meditation postures include the half-lotus, traditional full-lotus, chair sitting, kneeling and lying postures. Meditators usually use more than one posture for meditation. This requires the ability to meditate in any of the sitting or kneeling postures. Meditation cushions help in improving great postures and engaging in various meditation postures.

c) Proper alignment

This is very important to sit in a proper position and get good benefits from it. The spine needs to be erect with the lower back curved inside, the upper back curved out slightly. The neck should be curved in slight and the head level.

The alignment lets you support the ! body in a natural way. A meditation cushion provides the best of comfort and also work towards minimizing stress one tends to experience on the spinal components.

Buddhist song: Great is the Joy

Song from CD "Awakening" containing ten songs produced by City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Words, music and sung by former Bhikshuni Heng-yin. CD obtainable from: bttsonline.org Song lyrics shown below: GREAT IS THE JOY They say that one who sees With eyes like blazing wisdom suns The suffering of all beings Will weep for evil he has done Who would have guessed the Buddha's light Illumines the place beyond space and time? Who would have guessed that all along The treasure of his wisdom lies within your own mind? Great is the joy Great is the joy Great is the joy within my heart What you are is what you have done What you do, you will become Don't keep looking for what you never lost Turn the light around, take yourself across The sea of suffering is deep and wide A turn of the head is the other side The sea of suffering is deep and wide A turn of the head is the other side Great is the joy Great is the joy Great is the joy within my heart

Relax - It's Safe For You to Prosper!

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 02:07 AM PST

Whenever you are close to receiving a big check - like maybe a tax refund ! - or som e other form of financial relief like a pay raise at work, do you ever experience a strange sense of guilt or worry?

You may not be happy living in poverty, but at least it's normal and familiar to you

Relaxing Music Therapy - Relaxing Under Water (Piano Music)

Google+ plus.google.com Facebook www.facebook.com Relaxing Music Therapy For Stress Relief Relaxing music therapy is a very potent phenomenon. Sounds can soothe you, fire your imagination, bring you to the heights of ecstasy or bring you down to the depths of your soul. Music is known to relax and to help in stress relief. In the right manner, music can bring lightness into a serious situation. Relaxing music therapy can heal, soothe and bring calm tot an agitated mind. Defining "relaxing music" seems a matter of personal choice. Some people find the serene sounds of the waterfall and chirping birds relaxing while others relax with their favorite hard rock. How Does It Work? The therapeutic effect of relaxing sounds seems to have a scientific definition of its own. When the human brain is relaxed it produces more alpha brain waves. When a person is stressed out, his brain produces more beta and theta waves. Beta and theta waves are faster changing brain waves than alpha waves. Within the fight-or-flee logic of a sudden stressful situation, the human brain processes seem to speed up to act faster. This can be helpful in short, specific moments, but it is counter productive when it becomes a chronically state of being. A relaxing tune can help with its sounds typically rich in frequencies that are similar to our alpha type brain waves. The mind is always open to suggestions and thus when a person is agitated or tensed, relaxing sounds, rich in alpha like frequencies, can ...

Yoga Clothes 101 - For Modern Yoga Practicioners

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 01:10 AM PST

Article by Joshua Killingsworth

Like the people who practice yoga, modern yoga clothes are often socially responsible and eco-conscious creations. They are frequently made from soy and organic cotton or other natural or free trade acquired materials. Due to the new styles of yoga clothes in a bourgeoning market, those who indulge in the practice of yoga no longer need do so at the expense of style and comfort.

Once consisting of a pair of sweat pants and a tank top, yoga clothes have since morphed into an entire industry of clothing and accessories for those who participate in yoga. Yoga brought a whole new genus of attire to the world of fashion. As the art of yoga has grown vastly because of its healthy mind - body effect, yoga clothes have increased exponentially as well.

Comfort, style and functionality are some of the reasons to choose clothing designed specifically for yoga. The proper garb is essential for a yoga student whether they practice yoga alone at their home, in a class setting, or with a group in the park. As the practice of yoga is proven to be a positive health choice for individuals of all body types, ages, experience levels and health levels, so yoga clothes have changed to meet those needs in clothing bodies of various shapes and sizes.

Comfortable and non-binding yoga clothing are essential for a good experience. Although those two reasons remain the top ones arguing for the purchase of actual yoga clothes, there are many variables to consider when making a purchase. Yoga clothes must always be comfortable on every level; the cut of the fabric, the weight of the fabric, the texture or the way that the clothing fits should never offer discomfort. The style needs to allow for freedom of movement in all joints and in any pose that one might use in yoga. Another consideration is the fit of the attire when a body is in motion. While an outfit may not show skin when a person is simply standing about, it may reach an unacceptable level of exposure when the person is engaged in certain yoga pose! s.

The three main categories for yoga clothes are tops, pants and now, surprisingly, shoes as well. However, by tradition one never wore shoes when practicing yoga, recently shoes have begun to enjoy success, as more people prefer to practice in the outdoors. Yoga shoes are flexible versions of the athletic shoe and are available in many colors and styles as well as sizes. However, bare feet are still presumed to be the safest way to practice yoga, as that will allow for better balance and grip when stretching. Yoga tops are made in a great variety of styles and patterns, colors and prints. Camisoles, long sleeved and short-sleeved yoga shirts are all popular choices. These tops should be form fitting so form checks can be made, as well as to keep the tops from slipping up over the face during inverted positions of yoga. Yoga pants are traditionally grey or black, and can be full length or cropped. They are usually made of stretchable, lightweight material that moves with the body and often have elastic around the bottom to keep them from riding up.

First, people should not be afraid to express their own sense of style when choosing yoga clothes. They should look for pieces that say something about their own personality. The style and the fabric the yoga student chooses for their yoga clothes should always be durable; strong enough to endure endless stretching, and able to be frequently washed without showing a great amount of wear. Women with large bust sizes need to consider bras and tops that will allow them to achieve maximum support carefully, without sacrificing comfort or restricting movement. When clothing makes a person look good, it generally makes the person feel good as well. A careful selection of yoga clothing can make a person look and feel great during their yoga practice, and is not looking good and feeling good one of the basic premises of yoga itself.

Buddhism Comes to Japan Part 3

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 12:20 AM PST

Article by Arjanyai

3. Nichiren is a form of popular Buddhism. Its founder, Nichiren, was a monk of militant and nationalistic spirit. He taught that one should have absolute faith in the eternal Sakyamuni Buddha, that the only true doctrine was the teaching of the Saddharmapunฺdฺarika sutra, and that peace and happiness both of the individuals and of the nation could be achieved only by the practice of this true teaching. Its followers are taught to keep devotion to the Sutra and to turn the teaching into practice by repeating the words: Namu Myo Horengekyo - Homage to the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law. Nichiren attacked all other sects by declaring their doctrines and practices to be false and dangerous to the welfare of the country. He and his sect came into violent conflict with them and suffered serious troubles through persecution. In spite of this, the sect continued to grow. Its founder and followers even believed that its teaching would be accepted all over the world.

With the rise of these new sects, Buddhism was completely accepted by the Japanese people. If the Heian period marked the nationalization of Buddhism in Japan, it was during the Kamakura period that the popularization of Buddhism was achieved. Then Buddhist temples were erected in most of the small towns and villages. Though many subsects have appeared within the old sects, especially after World War II, no new major Buddhist sect has been founded in Japan since that time.

After the Kamakura period, the seat of shogunate was moved to Kyoto. In spite of civil wars and natural disasters, cultural leadership was maintained by Buddhist monks, especially those of Zen, and thearts flourished as never before. The influence of Zen found its expression in the development of the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, No drama, garden making, painting and other works of art, and also of Judo, Kendo and Bushido, which is the ethical code of the samurai.

The Suppression of BuddhismConstant internal wars and disorder during the period of! about o ne hundred years beginning with the rebellion of B.E. 2010 (1467 C.E.) brought to an end most of the great families of the former periods and brought about the rise of some new powerful families and great social changes. Priests and monks were engaged in warfare and battle either to protect themselves or to gain power. There were also many conflicts between religious groups such as the followers of Nichiren, those of Shinran and the monk soldiers of Tendai. They even took sides with some feudal lords against the other. Therefore, when Portuguese Christian missionaries came to Japan in about B.E. 2100 (1557 C.E.), Nobunaga, then the most powerful man in Japan, encouraged their activities. Nobunaga even attacked the monastic armies on Mount Hiei, burned about 3,000 monasteries and killed all of their inhabitants. Though he could not defeat the abbot Kennyo of Osaka and both parties had to accept an agreement, the political and military power of the monasteries declined and never recovered. The influence of Japanese Buddhism has never reached a high degree of strength since then.

The government support to Christianity, however, did not last long, for the quarrels between the Portuguese and the Spanish priests and between the Spanish and the Dutch priests which broke out between B.E. 2136 and 2154 made the ruler conscious of the danger of Christian priests as a political machine. This led to the persecution of the Christians and, finally, to the adoption of the exclusion policy in B.E. 2167 (1624 C.E.). In order to put an end to the influence of Christianity and to use the influence of Buddhism for its own benefit, the government turned to Buddhism, brought the Buddhist institutions under strict state control, and made them useful in maintaining its power. Moreover, Confucianism was greatly encouraged. Thus, Buddhist institutions weakened and their intellectual activities declined. While the people turned to worldly pleasures and sought material wealth, the temples encouraged these through the rites an! d belief s which satisfied worldly ends, and the monks and priests themselves adopted lives of indolence and negligence. Thus, throughout the Tokugawa or Edo period (B.E. 2146 - 2410/ 1603- 1867 C.E.), during which the capital was established at Edo or Tokyo, there was no significant development in Japanese Buddhism and it was during : his period that there arose a movement to make Shinto the national eligion of Japan.

The modernization of Japan started with the beginning of the Meiji period in B.E. 2411 (1868 C.E.) when the power and administration was restored from the shogun to the emperor, the policy of national seclusion came to an end, and Western culture was freely imported and imitated. Then, to affirm the supreme power of the emperor by his divinity and to strengthen nationalism, Shinto was separated from Buddhism and established as the national religion. Buddhist beliefs and worship were forbidden in the Imperial Household. There was even a movement called Haibutsu Kishaku to eradicate Buddhism in Japan. It was a time of crisis for Buddhism, though it was able to some degree to recover its strength and the government had to soften its anti-Buddhist policy.

iPhone App Video Review: Zen Pinball

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 12:11 AM PST

Zen Pinball is the latest release from Zen Studios. These developers are responsible for bringing digital pinball to just about every gaming platform, including the Pinball FX games on the Xbox Live Arcade and the multiplatform Marvel Pinball. They've pretty much perfected the video game pinball formula, and they've combined that with insanely lively and memorable boards based on various franchises, now made portable.

This is the same old basic pinball we all know and love, but with some bells and whistles exclusive to video games. Tap either side of the screen to activate the respective flipper and shake the phone to shake the table; simple. The tables themselves are highly interactive, and even bring you to various side and mini games outside of the main game. There really isn't much I can tell you about the gameplay except to say that it's very well done and superbly captures the physics and feel of actual pinball.

The real draw here is the variety of downloadable tables. The default table is called Sorcerers Lair, and features the story of two siblings trapped in a labyrinthine mansion surrounded by skeletons, ghosts, and other paranormal elements from the void. The first two downloadable tables come from one of my favorite things ever, Marvel Comics, featuring Wolverine and Captain America themed tables. These tables are really brought to life with several animated characters, impressive visual effects, great quality sound bites, and even epic music. These features are put on exhibit through the games various dynamic camera angles. I don't know what other boards they're planning to convert to the iOS version, but to give you an idea of things to expect, other versions of the game include Earth Defense, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and even Street Fighter 2 themed tables.

The graphics and visuals are colorful and impressive. The sound and music are also well done, but just like with real pinball tables, the various sound effects, dialogue bits, and background music can drown each other out and feel very chaotic. OpenFeint achievements and Leaderboards are supported, so you can continue those high score wars with your friends without having to hit up the bowling alley or pizza place.

You can also take turns playing multiplayer on the same device in "hot seat" mode, if you want. This iOS Universal game, with the initial Sorcerer's Lair table, is available completely for free, and the downloadable tables clock in at two dollars apiece. The lack of variety in this game is really it's biggest weakness. It's understandable considering how much work goes into the various animated characters and whatnot, but that excuse won't keep the tables from getting stale after a while. I just wish there was another sample table or two. Either way, download the free sample and see what you think.

Body and Mind in Balance

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 11:08 PM PST

Article by Salvatore Maraucci

To balance body and mind requires effort and time. Supreme health = supreme health of body and supreme health of mind. The Maximum of fitness! Why?

So you can achieve a certain bodily goal.So you can work out a certain psychological problem. So you can enjoy living.

We want to live comfortably without having to take drugs that cut off the ache of existing. We want to enjoy living to its fullest.

The old timers had two sayings for it. "Everything in moderation" and "A sound mind in a sound body."

Supreme health isn't physical or mental. They BOTH must be in equal balance.

If you have supreme bodily health but can't focus your thinking because of a mental instability, you are not balanced.

If you have supreme mind health but can't make your body react as you would like it to, you are not balanced.

Life is like a see-saw. You must attain a balance and you must work on keeping that balance.

The way to get that balance is by balancing your own supreme health of body with your own supreme health of mind.

In order to balance your body you must be aware of it by obatining instruction and gaining wisdom and by being alert of how you distribute it. You also have to do bodily movements every day that are fitting to the physical work that you will do that day. This doesn't take long, maybe 20 - 40 minutes a day. And remember: variety is the flavor that makes living exciting.

Balance your mind by being alert of your thinking processes. You must do some mind exercise daily that is correct for the mind work that you will do each day. Meditating and mind relaxation as little as 30 minutes a day are very helpful.

Doing these things daily will give you the supreme health of body and mind and aid you in awareness. Physical movement and meditating can aid you in achieving balance and enjoying a healthy lifestyle for today through balance of body and mind.

Rick Perry hates gays and loves religion. Me, the opposite.

Thank you, Rick Perry.

Your homophobic video, where you bizarrely speak of Obama's "war on religion" (huh?), has inspired me to carry on with my own genuine war against hateful religious dogma such as you espouse.

Take 30 seconds to watch it. Then, if you're as disgusted as I expect you'll be, head to You Tube and click on the thumbs-down (dislike) icon.

So far about 87,000 people dislike the video and 2,000 like it. Good to know Rick Perry doesn't represent Americans. Just the mean-spirited ones.

The Philosophy of Yoga

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 10:16 PM PST

Article by Craig Perkins

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word Yuj, which means to join or unite. The word implies the acts of joining or uniting the body with the mind and the mind with the soul. The goal of this union is to achieve a happy, balanced and useful life.

For many centuries, many yoga paths have become specialized. The philosophy of yoga comes from many sources and has been taught and written about by many different teachers. The Vedas and the Upanishads provide some of the earliest references to differing paths of yoga but they are compilations of yoga teachings that were handed down for centuries prior to their creation.

Stories of yoga are portrayed in early versions of the Puranas, the Ramayana and the Mahabarat. Most of these embrace the spiritual aspects of yoga. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a more technical presentation of exercise and breathing practices.

Over time, differing teachers have developed their own methodologies and philosophies. The Yoga Sutras was written more than 2200 years ago and brought together all known theories and practices as of that time. Many of today's yoga practices have roots in these original teachings.

Amazingly, the Sutras are still considered a very compelling and profound study of the human psyche. Teachers have adapted their interpretations of the Sutras to the era in which they practice. The goals have always remained achieving the perfect balance through a union of the body and mind.

The Yogis believe that the body is the primary instrument in our work and growth. As a result, proper care of the body allows students to realize their potential and achieve proper balance. Yoga exercises are designed to improve circulation, stimulate the abdominal organs and put pressure on the body's glandular system. To achieve and sustain our balance, exercise, breathing and meditation are practiced. Only then can we be in balance with our environment.

Although there are numerous forms of yoga practiced today, there are six primary branches.!

H atha Yoga - This is the most common path of yoga taught in the West. Hatha Yoga incorporates physical poses (Asana), Breathing techniques (Pranayama) and meditation to achieve health and spirituality. Popular styles of Hatha Yoga include Iyengar, Integral, Astanga, Kripalu and Jiva Mukti. The common goal of these styles is healthy mind and healthy body.

Bhakti Yoga - This path is most popular in India. The focus is on heart and devotion. Yogis encourage us to find the "One" in every person and everything. By developing our abilities to accept and love, we will become devoted to the "One."

Raja Yoga - This is the path of yoga that is described as the King of Yoga. Self-discipline is at the core of Raja Yoga. Most of the practitioners of Raja Yoga are members of religious or spiritual orders. Teachings of this path evolve around the Eight Limbs of the Yoga sutras. The self is central to this path and practitioners achieve self-respect by learning to master themselves.

Jnana Yoga - The development of the mind is central to the practitioners of Jnana Yoga. By developing one's intelligence, man surpasses any limitations so that the mind can absorb more wisdom. This path allows man to experience other religions and philosophies as an open and rational mind are necessary to fully develop the spirit.

Karma Yoga - Karma Yoga is the path of service emphasizing that your present situation is based upon past actions. By choosing a path of selfless service, we choose a future that is free from negativity and selfishness. Practitioners commit to change their attitude toward good, change their souls and these changes alter their destiny.

Tantra Yoga - This is the most confusing of yoga paths as it singularly focuses on man's rituals to experience those things that are sacred. Tantra Yoga is the path of rituals. Tantra Yogis must possess qualities like humility, purity, devotion, dedication, cosmic love and truthfulness to embrace man's rituals. Sex is just one of the paths of this yoga.

Yoga is not a religion. In fact, yoga is practiced by persons of many differing faiths. Yoga is a set of techniques that enable us to develop and understand our spirituality. Similarly, yoga is not an exercise plan although exercise does develop physical fitness which allows us to perform better mentally. However, yoga practices strive to develop the mental side as well as the physical side. More than anything else, yoga is a spiritual quest that includes improved health, happiness, tranquility and knowledge as core benefits.

BKS Iyengar 1938 newsreel Part 1 (SILENT)

To buy DVD dan@balihealer.com. This is a film made by McPetruk in 1938 showing and shows Iyengar demonstrating yoga. Here we see a young Iyengar (still alive, well, and doing yoga, BTW) doing advanced poses that constitute the advanced A & B astanga series. This is obviously well before Iyengar dropped the vinyasa aspect from his practice and rebranded it as "Iyengar Yoga", putting greater emphasis on alignment.

Cultures and religions blind us to reality

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 10:06 PM PST

In a TIME magazine story about the Penn State sex scandal -- rape of young boys by a football coach is alleged -- I came across an analysis of how people become blinded to what is right in front of their eyes.

These excerpts from "Penn State of Mind" reminded me of religious true believers. Their blind faith causes them to become equally blind to aspects of reality that don't mesh with what they desperately want to believe in.

Within a college bubble, say organizational psychologists, the urge to shape your mental picture of the world can be overwhelming. "Culture trumps everything," says Laura Finfer, a psychologist and a principal at a New York City executive consulting firm.

Colleges, Finfer has found, can be quite clannish. "Cultures define you, and you become blind to everything in front of your eyes."

Or the way you see things changes. Ral Aldag, a management professor at the University of Wisconsin's School of Business, points to two cognitive tricks: selective perception and subjective perception.

Selective perception is our bias toward ignoring information that is at odds with your worldview. Subjective perception explains our tendency to couple uncomfortable information with reaffirming facts in order to make ourselves feel better.

For example, Penn Staters decry abuse. But pair that with anger over the indignity of Paterno's dismissal, and Paterno becomes a victim.

Cohesive groups like the Penn State football leadership tend to draw boundaries around themselves. "We apply rules of fair and just behavior to our own groups and people within them," says Michelle Duffy, an organizational behavior professor at the University of Minnestota's Carlson School of Management.

"But we morally exclude outsiders. In some ways you are dehumanizing out-group members -- in this case, the victims."

N. Korea: Buddhist Meeting of South and North Korea

Pyongyang, September 5 (KCNA) -- A north-south Buddhist joint mass for praying for national reunification was held at the Pohyon Temple in Mt. Myohyang on Monday to mark the millennium of the wood engraving of 80 000 blocks of Complete Collection of Buddhist Scriptures. Present there from the north side were Chairman Sim Sang Jin and other personages of the Central Committee of the Buddhist Federation of Korea, those of the Hyangsan County Committee of the Federation and priests and believers of the Temple and from the south side were Ri Ja Sung, chairman of the Buddhist Orders Council and chief of the Administrative Office of the Buddhist Jogye Order, priests, believers and other personages concerned. A Buddhist ritual was held and speeches were made at the mass. Then a north-south Buddhist joint address was read out to pray for national reunification. Speeches and address noted that to hold the joint mass at the Pohyon Temple in Mt. Myohyang, the site for praying for the good of the country, on the millennium of the wood engraving of 80 000 blocks of Complete Collection of Buddhist Scriptures is a meaningful Buddhist event as it reflects the desire and will of all the fellow countrymen to realize charity, equality and peace in accordance with sacred teachings of Buddha, and build a reunified country, an earthly paradise in the present world, where the idea of getting rid of pain and attaining happiness has come true. All the Buddhists in the north and the south should ...

Help us build the Shambhala Sun Foundation

Posted: 08 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

By James Gimian, Publisher

We at the Shambhala Sun Foundation deeply appreciate your support. After all, we, as a not-for-profit organization, would not be in such a strong position to serve the dharma without it. And now your support is more important than ever.

As the year ends, we're pleased to report that readership of both Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma magazines remains strong. Healthy subscription and newsstand sales have enabled us to extend our reporting and community-building. And we're more than just magazines — through our websites, sponsorships, conferences, and programs we serve Buddhist communities of all traditions.

We've also extended our community through Mindful.org, a website (and related activities) that — although not yet revenue-generating — supports the growing movement to bring the benefits of mindfulness and meditation into homes, healthcare, schools, prisons, and even the US military.

Our work expands, but the challenges that come with being in the media industry are expanding, too: reduced advertising income, fewer outlets available for selling magazines, the cost of adapting to digital platforms.

If you wish to help, here are simple ways to do so:

In addition, year-end donations have a tremendous impact. In the past two years we returned from the December holiday to find sizeable gifts from readers in our mailbox. Both times these gifts (in the mid-five figures) made a considerable, positive impact on our ability to fulfill our goals. In the coming years we'll have to rely even more on the generosity of readers like you, who are as passionate as we are about fostering the growth of genuine buddhadharma, meditation, and mindfulness in the West.

Please help support the Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma with a tax-deductible, year-end contribution to the not-for-profit Shambhala Sun Foundation. You can donate in the following ways:

  • Online at www.shambhalasun.com/donate
  • Calling 1-877-422-8404 ext. 36
  • Mailing your contribution to Shambhala Sun Foundation, 1660 Hollis St., Ste. 701, Halifax, NS, Canada, B3J 1V7.

Thank you for your vision and generosity!

Yours,
James M. Gimian
Publisher

PS: Even if you're unable to help financially, you can still help by friending us online and sharing content from the Shambhala Sun and Buddhaharma with friends who might enjoy and benefit from it. Again: thank you!
