An Article on Stress Reduction

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Article by Darin Browne

If you are looking for articles on stress, chances are you are experiencing stress right now. These articles may not give you immediate relief, but they should offer some technique that you can apply to your daily life to help in your stress relief management.

Articles on Stress Reveal the Extent of Anxiety in the Modern World

Articles on stress around the world are revealing the enormous problem that anxiety has become in our modern society. They show that anxiety and indeed depression are troubling people everywhere, as they worry or react to uncertainty in relationships, finances and life.

Pam Belluck of the New York Times in one of these articles on stress wrote that therapists and psychiatrists are seeing more and more first time patients, and in an American Psychological Association poll from September, 80 % of those surveyed said the economy is causing significant pressure, up from 60% six months earlier,

In addition, the National Sleep Foundation reports that 27% of people surveyed have experienced sleeplessness as a result of stress, and the National Suicide Prevention hotline reports that calls have increased by over 27% from January 2008 to January 2009!

Articles on Stress Can Show Ways to Deal With Anxiety

If you are reading articles on stress you may find some great, natural ways you can reduce the impact that this is having on your life. Here's a summary of some ideas I have recently found...

First, be sure to eat smart. Many articles on stress suggest that a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, true whole grains, low fat dairy, lean meats or fish and healthy unsaturated fats makes a huge difference in your stress anxiety management.

Next, many articles suggest effective time management and slowing down as viable anxiety management tools, so taking control of an often chaotic life could be the key.

Another tool suggested by many articles is to take time out for yourself, doing the things you love to do. Walking, ! reading, watching movies or having coffee with friends can all help to reduce stress in your life.

Physical exercise is also a stress anxiety management technique which many articles are suggesting yields good results. Couple this with at least 7 hours of sleep and you are physically on your way to reducing stress and anxiety in your life.

Don't Stop With Articles on Stress Alone

Finally, let me urge you to not stop with simply reading articles in an effort to find stress anxiety management techniques. Go further and do something about it, and look for ways you can incorporate stress anxiety management techniques into your life. This way you can not only read articles on stress but you can do something to reduce anxiety and pressures in your life

My rant on the West

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

The 'West', if we think of it as representing the vanguard of science that brings us facts, not assumptions or fantasies, has brought us little in the way of real or reliable facts when it comes to certain important matters such as health. (I would like to get into cosmology but that is too long of a subject. Suffice it to say the Big Bang is bullshit.) Even today, we don't really know the cause of cancer or heart disease or why males are far more likely to suffer from autism than females. There are a lot of assumptions as to why cancer rates have not significantly fallen; the same with autism which is still on the rise. In addition, the West's so-called scientific method seems to be more interested in chasing grants than truth.

When it comes to dismissing religion the West is certainly at the vanguard. Christopher Hitchens' book, God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything (2007) encapsulates the modern West's view of religion in general. Hitchens' criticism sets the stage for a new religion, one in which the physical sciences and reason dominate, or put more simply, one in which sensory consciousness sits on the 'chair of Peter' being the new preserver of unity.

Perish the thought that sensory consciousness is only an attribute of absolute spirit and can be superseded. In essence, this is what Buddhism actually teaches which should be obvious to anyone who is familiar with the Lankavatara Sutra which, incidentally, early Zen Buddhism was based upon. With this in mind, the West can mount no real criticism of Buddhism, except to dismiss it completely as teaching mumbo-jumbo. But this is not a real attack anymore than ignoring Plato can be viewed as a victory over his ideas.

To really defeat Buddhism one must prove that nirvana is impossible in which the human mind transcends its phenomena and by doing so, returns to itself as pure substance, proving that all things have no real existence as we previously believed. There is only Mind (cittamâtra). This, to be sure, is a daunting task for anyone wishing to overthrow Buddhism. Yes, it is better to ignore Buddhism hoping it goes away.

If we imagine Christopher Hitchens taking on Buddhism his criticisms would be directed against the culturally derived institutions of Buddhism which have fallen prey to a totalitarian state or a feudal system. Needless to say, many of his arguments would be justified. Such, however, is not a criticism of Buddhism itself, that is, the actual words of the Buddha.

Right now the West is the defender of the dogma of Scientism, that is, the omnipotence of the physical sciences, all of which rest completely on sensory consciousness and sensory experience. But even granting the West to be the upholder of reason, reason can know nothing purely of itself, according to Kant. The limit of seonsory experience cannot go beyond the conditioned, either. The West has, in effect, thrown itself into a conditioned prison of its own making from which it cannot escape since it denies the unconditioned (i.e., absolute substance, nirvana, etc.) and along with this, will not accept that reason is limited to the conditioned.

Death Is an Illusion

Death Is an Illusion

One person, Benedict, who reported his near-death experience in great detail, came close to describing eternity. After seeing shifting images, Benedict became aware that what he was actually seeing was the Higher Self matrix, a cosmic pattern of consciousness. Each person has a Higher Self that serves as an oversoul and also as a conduit back to the source.

Gazing at the matrix of souls, Benedict became aware they were all connected; humanity formed one being; each of us is an aspect of this wholeness.

Benedict asked the light to reveal the entire universe to him "beyond all human illusion." He was told to ride the stream of life. His speed accelerated beyond the speed of light as he left the solar system, passed through the heart of the galaxy, and became aware of many worlds and many life-forms. What appeared to be travel through space was in fact the expansion of his own consciousness.

Benedict describes entire galaxies disappearing into a point, of all life-forms making their presence known, of a second light that contains every vibration in the universe.

Passing into the second light, he experienced a profound shift into silence and utter stillness. He could see to infinity. He was in the void, pre-creation, and his consciousness was limitless. He was in contact with the absolute, with unbounded awareness. He perceived all of creation generating itself without beginning or end. Millions of Big Bangs were constantly generating new universes. Since he was beyond time, this was happening simultaneously in all dimensions.

After reaching this cosmic epiphany, Benedict's journey reversed itself, step-by-step, and he woke up with the unshakable realization that death was an illusion.

Meditating the Stress Away - Best Stress Reduction Tips

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST

Article by Elizabeth Peterson K.

There are a number of different natural things that can be done in order to reduce our stress levels. Some of them may work for some individuals and other individuals may need something different in order to maintain their stress levels at a low point. Something that tends to work for everybody, however, is meditation. The type of meditation that you do is going to depend upon your own personal circumstances but it is something that can help to reduce your stress levels very quickly.

The first thing that you should consider doing is waking up a little bit earlier in the morning in order to get some time for yourself. Many of us tend to jump out of bed and begin working immediately in our mind, at least until we are able to begin working physically. That is not necessarily a good thing, and it only helps to raise our stress levels very early in our day. If we give ourselves a little bit of time whenever we are first starting out, however, it can make all the difference in how our overall stress levels are going to be throughout the day.

Even if you are only able to give yourself 15 minutes in the morning which is totally your time, that will be enough to make a difference in your life. Start out by drinking plenty of water in the morning, something that will help to balance your body on the inside and then spend a few minutes quietly meditating about a peaceful situation. It really doesn't matter how you meditate, as long as the time that you spend doing so is done in a quality fashion.

You can also use meditation throughout the day in order to help to reduce your stress levels quickly. If you find that the stress is mounting, simply close your eyes and spend a few minutes relaxing in your peaceful situation inside of your mind. It even doesn't need to be a few minutes, if you only have a few seconds it may be enough to help to reduce the stress chemicals in your body.

You can expect to see some instant results but over the course of time, those results will grow. With a li! ttle bit of practice, anybody can use meditation at a moments notice in order to reduce the amount of stress that they are feeling and then to jump right into the situation and handle it successfully

Do you want to quickly get rid of your stress? If yes, then I recommend you get a copy of the Dealing With Stress Naturally book. This program has helped 1000s of people round the world, teaching them natural and effective methods to handle and address stress.

The Accidental Buddhist

When Dinty Moore was fifteen and on a Catholic Youth retreat weekend at a monastery in upstate New York, he thought for a brief moment he might grow up to be a priest. Instead, over the years, he lost his faith. "Twenty-five years later, I found myself at the doorway of a different monastery," Moore writes. " And the monks? Well, this time the monks were Buddhists."

The Accidental Buddhist is the funny, provocative story of how Dinty Moore, as American as Huckleberry Finn, went looking for the faith he'd lost in what might seem the most unlikely of places: the ancient Eastern tradition of Buddhism. Like George Plimpton venturing into the world of professional sports, Dinty Moore enters the retreat centers, zendos, and meditation halls that have been taking root in every corner of America.

Moore takes the time to see what Buddhism has to offer the harried, hassled American of the new century. He explores the different varieties of American Buddhism, attends rallies, even tracks down and questions the Dalai Lama. In the process, much to his own surprise, he finds himself fascinated and moved by what he encounters.

For anyone who has wondered about the gorwing visibility of Buddhism, Dinty Moore demystifies and explains the contradictions and concepts of this most mystic-seeming of religious traditions, while putting it into an American context. New Book Provides Latest Research On Happiness

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 04:00 AM PST

Pleasure: The Secret Ingredient in Happiness by Marisol Garcia, Ph.D. provides groundbreaking scientific research on how everyday pleasures can lead to increased happiness. According to Dr. Garcia, pleasure is therapeutic in treating stress, anxiety and depression.

Orange, CT (PRWEB) December 06, 2011

Researchers state that forty percent of happiness is determined by the quality and quantity of pleasurable activities in someone's life. Happy people spend more time engaging in pleasure than those who are not as happy. Furthermore, researchers argue that genetic and contextual factors influencing happiness can be overridden if pleasurable activities are given more attention. That is, the brain can be "rewired."

Drawing from years of personal and professional experience in social behavior, Dr. Garcia packs this book with simple and practical guidelines, exercises, and inspiring personal narratives changing the relationship people have with pleasure. In this provocative book, people will be inspired to transform their lives. In Garcia's words,

"I had to give up the notion that I shouldn't have pleasure and be pleasured. I didn't feel I deserved to or should indulge in pleasure. I was scared that if I did, I wouldn't go to work the next day. But in the end, incorporating pleasure into my life was effortless and made me feel happier. Feeling more happiness gave me more energy and enthusiasm to live my life."

Marisol Garcia is a therapist, social researcher, writer, and lecturer. She received her doctorate from the University of Connecticut. Her private practice is located in Connecticut. Marisol is Assistant Director for Partners in Social Research. To learn more about her work, visit her website at http://www.garciawestberg.com or http://www.thepleasurecure.com.

Yoga For Dummies

The long-awaited update of the trusted yoga book

A decade since its initial publication, Yoga For Dummies, 2nd Edition has been updated and revised to include coverage of the newest concepts and practices that have emerged in the yoga community over the past ten years. Still maintaining its emphasis on safe approaches to the physical practice of yoga, Yoga For Dummies, 2nd Edition breaks down the concepts and poses, making yoga easy-to-understand and easy-to-apply for everyone.

Yoga has been bringing health and peace of mind to millions of people for five millennia-and it can do the same for you. Turn to Yoga For Dummies, 2nd Edition to find out how to unlock your body's extraordinary potential, while strengthening your mind as well.

  • Focuses on Hatha Yoga, which works primarily with the body through postures, breathing exercises, and other techniques
  • Specialized yoga instructions for all ages, as well as partner yoga
  • Practicing yoga during pregnancy, as well as yoga relief for women in mid-life
  • Using restorative yoga and yoga therapy to combat chronic aches and pains

Whether you're a beginner or a yoga guru, Yoga For Dummies, 2nd Edition gives you the tips and techniques you need to experience the health benefits of yoga as part of a complete wellness and exercise program.Yoga for Dummies proves that this 5,000-year-old Indian discipline can be all things to all people--the athlete striving for more-limber limbs, the stressed-out professional needing mental calm, peace, and clarity; the pregnant mom-to-be looking to keep herself toned and her emotions balanced, the spiritual seeker wanting to access the higher planes of consciousness.

Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., and Larry Payne, Ph.D., are internationally recognized yoga experts. After explaining how to prepare your body and mind for yoga--including warnings about how to practice safely--they jump straight into the postures (asanas! ), i nstructions for which make up the meat of book (relaxation, breathing, movement, sequencing, compensation, sitting). Feuerstein and Payne carefully and in great detail lead the reader through every step, although they do advise first-timers to supplement the book with actual classes until they have the basics down. Throughout the book, clear explanations accompany black-and-white photos and drawings. (Unfortunately, following the written instructions is hard enough when your feet are in the air or your head's down by your ankles, and the book would have been improved if the pictures always appeared on the same page as their instructions.)

Readers then learn about tailoring a yoga program to their needs; using props; practicing "Yoga Throughout the Day"; incorporating yoga into sex, meditation, menopause, and pregnancy; using yoga to treat back problems and PMS; and practicing yoga with kids. The book also covers yogic ethics, philosophy, and resources. It's not all asanas and pranas, though--Yoga for Dummies is sprinkled with the humor characteristic of the For Dummies series (a section explaining that the ego is the ultimate source of stress is titled "Wherever ego, I go") and practical advice (the Forgiving Limbs maneuver allows you to bend your legs and arms a bit rather than try to fully extend them, so that you can perform postures you're not yet quite limber enough for). This is both an excellent beginner's guide and a good reference for more advanced yoginis who want a brush-up course. --Stefanie Durbin

Meditation Techniques Follow a Logical Step By Step Process

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 01:00 AM PST

Article by Lily Candice

When you have made the decision to imbibe meditation as a way of life, it would become pertinent to know of the meditation techniques to employ in this activity. Meditation techniques vary according to the originating influence of the particular meditation school involved. Most religious practice have developed their own peculiar meditation techniques, however, meditation in itself need not have any religious leanings whatsoever; and meditation techniques have been developed by several meditation centers that are not religiously connected in any way. Meditation techniques need not be elaborate in any way, and may be easily adopted by those with a sincere desire to adopt the practice of meditation. Meditation is basically a way through which the individual can achieve a state of calmness of the mind which is characterized by feelings of peace, love and happiness, despite the pr evailing situation or circumstances you find yourself in at any given moment. When you practice meditation using proper meditation techniques, you will be able to approach the certain difficulties of life without unnecessary fretting and worry.Z Meditation is a meditation center based in the Himalayas of India where the meditation techniques employed are known as Deep DeConditioning Inquiry and Radiant Mantras. These meditation techniques follow a logical step by step process through which the student will learn how to disabuse her mind from harmful conditioning in her thinking and thought patterns. These wrong ways of thinking are usually based on desires, beliefs and expectations. The meditation techniques taught at the Z Meditation center allow you to let go of these wrong beliefs and free your mind and therefore enabling you to give your best effort in any given situation while not worrying or anxious about the outcome of your actions.Any one who wishes to take up the practice of meditation needs to come forward with a sincere conviction as well as a disciplined mindset to be able to benefit from the meditation techniqu! es which she will learn from experienced and established meditation teachers. This discipline and sincerity is essential as meditation is not a one off course which you attend, but a life long way of living. Moreover, though the results of practicing meditation techniques may begin to be observed in the individual within a few days of working, it will take a while and consistent practice for the individual to reach a state of complete awareness from which there can be no return. By this time, the practice of meditation techniques would have been so integrated within you, that it will be carried out naturally at regular intervals throughout the day.Meditation techniques do not demand any esoteric postures or chanting as is erroneously believed by some of us. The prerequisites are setting aside at least an hour a day for the practice, while being mindful of oneself and your thinking pattern throughout the day. Z Meditation's meditation techniques encourage you to dig deep within and ponder over the reasons and use of certain beliefs and other general conditionings. When you have come to realize the futility of these unnecessary thought patterns, it will be easy to give them up and attain a state of bliss.

The Healthy Mind Detox Plan

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Article by Michelle Spencer

The healthy mind detox takes you through 10 days and 10 tasks. Each day you carry out a task that makes you look at yourself, your life or your thoughts differently. Getting a new perspective gives you the chance to see if you are getting what you want and need out of your life. If you can think clearly then problems seem easier to solve. You can come to a decision more quickly if you just keep to the salient points.

Following a Healthy Mind Detox program actually requires you to stop and take a really long look, not just at yourself but inside yourself and all around yourself. Remember, the whole program can be completely private. You may wish to write things down on a day-to-day basis, or you may wish to Healthy Mind Detox by simply using your mind.

Part of looking at yourself is being truthful about what you want in life: not just health, wealth and happiness (join the queue!), but much more specific things, things that can be done immediately. Keeping your eye on the big picture is very important but you also have to have the smaller, more immediate pictures colored in to keep you going.

You will be asked to think about what you really desire. Desire is better than want because it injects a real passion and passion is a strong motivational tool. Do you desire to live in the house you live in? Do you desire to landscape the garden? Do you desire more friends or fewer friends? Do you desire to go out more? etc, etc. If you sort out the small picture desires then the big picture comes into focus quite naturally.

Preparation tips

Live for the moment

Future planning is very, very important but don't wish your life away! Living for the moment is great fun. You get loads more out of each day without doing anything other than living your life and feeling how it feels. Living for the moment means thinking for the moment. Think about things you can do today, today. And leave thinking about things you cannot do until tomorrow until tomorrow.

If you don't organiz! e your b rain this way then, before you know it, you will be thinking about everything at every moment during your day and never actually get on with 'doing' anything! How easy is it, when you have an exciting weekend booked, to spend Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday thinking about Saturday? Poor weekdays, what did they ever do to deserve being wished away? Saturday and Sunday were always guaranteed - they weren't going anywhere - so why not enjoy the weekdays and the weekend. You should also learn to waste time deliberately. Let your mind relax and regenerate, actually plan to do nothing, do things for no reason but don't just let time slip away unnoticed - use it as relaxation so that when you want to think about something you are ready to.

Yoga Nidra Meditation CD: Extreme Relaxation of Conscious Deep Sleep

This meditation is an authentic rendering of Yoga Nidra as taught in the Himalayas by the masters of Yoga, Vedanta and Tantra. While it is an advanced meditation practice, anyone can start the practice while watching it deepen over time.

Yoga Nidra literally means "Yogic Sleep." In this deep meditation you train your attention to leave the chatter of the Waking state of mind, go past the fantasy of the Dreaming state, and consciously, intentionally enter the stillness of the Deep Sleep state, yet paradoxically remain awake and in deep meditation. For thousands of years the Yogis have used Yoga Nidra to master the art of sleep, to balance the subtle energies, and to experience greater depths of meditation.

The state of conscious Deep Sleep or Yoga Nidra is underneath, behind, or subtler than meditations at either the Waking or Dreaming levels. This subtle state is called "Prajna," which means "supreme knowing." "Pra" means "supreme," and "jna" means "knowing." The conscious experience of this state is a doorway to higher, formless knowing that has been called the infinite library of wisdom and the teacher within.

The depth of authentic Yoga Nidra comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, including your body, breath, and the subtler mind, rather than diverting attention through music or inner fantasies (as pleasant as these may be). This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being, while remaining fully awake and aware. The Yoga Nidra methods bring you to a place of awareness where you are able to completely let go of any words, thoughts, images, impressions, or pictures in the mind. You are guided to allow your mind to "empty, empty, empty" though you remain fully awake and clear of mind.

The practices on this CD will gently train your ability to direct your own attention, which is the primary skill in the art of meditation. You will find that ! you are gradually able to use these methods on your own, without the CD, and the benefits will be with you not only during your practice time, but also during the activities of daily life.

The voice will systematically guide you to explore your physical body, then move through 61 specific points within the body, and then practice ascending breath awareness along the body and spine. Your attention will be brought to the space between the eyebrows, then to the throat, and finally to the heart center, where you will go deep into stillness and silence, beyond the activities of the mind.

The Yoga Nidra CD has five tracks. The first track is an introduction (8:02 minutes), describing the state of Yoga Nidra and the practices on the CD. The next four tracks move through four sequential practices that are listened to together, so as to form a complete practice of 57:24 minutes (CD is 65:36 minutes in total). These four tracks can also be listened to individually, as complete practices unto themselves, which allows you to have the benefits of practice when less time is available.

Shocker! Thoughts really aren't about anything at all

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Thoughts. Desires. Intentions. Plans. Interpretations. Meanings. These seem to be so important, so vital, so much a part of being human.

We think about stuff. We have feelings about stuff. We argue, debate, laugh, cry, discuss, cogitate, agonize over, dream about stuff. Yet there are good neuroscientific reasons to say, "We're totally mistaken. It's impossible for our minds to be about anything."

So argues Alex Rosenberg in his book, "The Atheist's Guide to Reality." A few days ago I blogged about it here, ending with a quotation that stimulated this post:

Ultimately, science and scientism are going to give up as illusory the very thing conscious experience screams out at us loudest and longest: the notion that when we think, our thoughts are about anything at all, inside or outside of our minds.

Rosenberg doesn't deny that thinking happens. Or that emotions happen.

What he denies is our intuitive assumption that what's going on inside our minds is about something. Most challenging of all, this leads him to the conclusion that it's wrong to say things like "I'm seeking the truth about myself."

This "about" issue is the most difficult part of Rosenberg's book. He says so himself, and I agree.

I've re-read the chapters where he lays out his arguments for thoughts not being about anything at all. I agree with him, but it's difficult to describe why in a simple fashion -- perhaps because I, like everybody else, am so used to believing that I'm capable of thinking about something.

Yet this notion isn't unfamiliar to me. It's akin to Buddhism's thoughts without a thinker. Thinking happens, for sure. The questions are, who's doing the thinking, and how?

Rosenberg travels down several argument-avenues in his attempt to convince the reader that our thoughts aren't about anything at all. He works hard at this, because he sees it as vitally important for understanding reality as it is.

What you absolutely cannot be wrong about is that your conscious thought was about something. Even having a wildly wrong thought about something requires that the thought be about something.

It's this last notion that introspection conveys that science has to deny. Thinking about things can't happen at all. The brain can't have thoughts about Paris, or about France, or about capitals, or about anything else for that matter.

When consciousness convinces you that you, or your mind, or your brain has thoughts about things, it is wrong.

Don't misunderstand, no one denies that the brain receives, stores, and transmits information. But it can't do these things in anything like the way introspection tells us it does -- by having thoughts about things. The way the brain deals with information is totally different from the way introspection tells us it does.

Seeing why and understanding how the brain does the work that consciousness gets so wrong is the key to answering all the rest of the questions that keep us awake at night worrying over the mind, the self, the soul, the person.

This is what I love about science, especially neursoscience: it's like a Zen master.

Except, you don't get hit with a physical stick while the master yells "Wake up! Wake up!" The hitting, the yelling, the urging to wake up -- these shocks to the psyche come through understanding the deep meaning of scientific research into the human mind/brain.

After all, that's who we are.

Neurons, brain cells, synapses, all doing amazing stuff, creating consciousness, experiences, our feeling of me-ness. We know (albeit imperfectly) what bubbles to the surface of conscious awareness, but don't have any access to the brain processes which work away outside of our ability to know.

People are attracted to mysticism and the occult because they promise to reveal hidden truths. Well, that's exactly what science does. Except science offers up good reasons to accept its truths, because they are founded on more than blind faith and personal claims.

Here's my favorite passage from Rosenberg's book that aims to explain why we can't think "about" anything:

Our conscious thoughts are very crude indicators of what is going on in our brain. We fool ourselves into treating those conscious markers as thoughts about what we want and about how to achieve it, about plans and purposes. We are even tricked into thinking they somehow bring about behavior.

We are mistaken about all of these things. Meanwhile, our brain's input/output circuits are working, behind the curtain so to speak, creating these illusions by playing markers out in a (quasi-) grammatical or syntactical order through consciousness.

Whatever neural arrangements these conscious markers consist of, they are almost certainly not sufficient in number or organization by themselves to drive the behavior that is supposed to result from conscious thoughts about stuff.

When it comes to causing and guiding our actions, the stream of consciousness is pretty much just along for the ride, like the conscious feeling of choosing in Libet's experiments. This is just another reason to treat conscious thoughts as crude indicators, not rough approximations of anything the brain is actually doing.

We humans are animals. We need to remember that.

Yes, we're the most highly evolved animals on Earth -- the most intelligent, with the best communication skills. We can tell stories to ourselves, and others, about how special we are. But really, we're not. The human brain is still a bunch of meat, just like the brains of other animals are.

Consider the frog. Rosenberg writes about how a fly passes in front of a frog's visual field.

The frog's tongue flicks at the fly and brings it into its mouth. We watch this display and marvel at the frog's ability, something we can't do.

...We are, of course, amazed at the environmental appropriateness of the frog's tongue flicking. We say, "The frog knows where the fly is. There must be neurons in its brain that contain information about the fly's speed and direction."

It's perfectly natural for us to say this, but it's an illusion that results solely from the environmental appropriateness of the dot-detection to tongue-flicking chain of neural inputs and outputs. The frog's neural circuitry can't be about the fly; they can't be about anything.

...Now let's turn to the human case. Here the behavior is even more exquisitely appropriate to the environment. Our behavior is not limited to anything as simple as flicking our tongue at edible insects. We engage in conversation. What could be more exquisitely appropriate to our environments?

The appropriateness is, however, only different in degree from the appropriateness of the frog's tongue flicking.

Croak! Croak!

I've just performed a human equivalent of frog-tongue flicking by writing this blog post. As you have by reading it.

Ribbit! Ribbit!

My brain did it. Yours also. No thoughts about required. It's just what people do. The Internet is one of the lily pads where we hang out and do stuff.

A Buddhist Wants to Know My Spiritual Views.

www.Torahlifeministries.org Here is a question a viewer of my health show asked and my reply in the video. Paul, Could you elaborate on your spiritual views? Is there more to it than what's in the Bible? Have you studied A Course In Miracles, which integrates Christianity and Eastern thought? Do you feel that the Bible is complete and adequate for modern times? What about Eastern schools of thought such as Buddhism? It seems to me as though many of those who have the most profound peace of mind and the highest levels of enlightenment are those that practice meditation, which isn't really taught in the Bible, only in Eastern traditions and in the more mystical or esoteric branches of Christianity and Judaism, not more mainstream ones. How does your "spirituality" differ from mainstream Christianity and Judaism (which embrace organized religion and various specific cultural traditions that seem to have little to do with spirituality or establishing a personal connection with anything divine). What does "spirituality" mean to you?

Spiritual Expansion - Psychic Attack What Is It?

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 10:00 PM PST

Article by Terrie Marie

Psychic Attack, as defined by The Encyclopedic Psychic Dictionary (June Bletzer, PhD. 1986), is the deliberate sending of negative emotions and thoughts of hate, jealousy, envy, dis-respect, and or resentment from one person towards another person.

It is not necessary for the sender to be aware of his or her actions for the receiver to feel the effects of negative energy. Psychic Attack is passive-aggressive anger which can cause harm to the person being "attacked". It is a form of mental or emotional tampering. Meaning you are tampering with, causing un-ease in another human or animal when you think or send negative energy in the form of thoughts of emotions. This is a form of mental abuse especially as you become consciously aware of what you are doing.

An example of an exchange of positive energy is feeling happiness, contentment and joy for another's good fortune as someone shares information about an experience with you. A positive energy exchange can and does occur during the sharing of a stressful situation or a disappointment by having genuine concern, empathy or compassion for what is being shared or expressed.

A negative energy exchange occurs most often during times of stress between friends, partners, co-workers. Negative emotions can foster unhealthy relationships and hostile work environments. It will also cause dis-harmony and may cause dis-ease in your physical body, which can, if unhealed, manifest physically.

Each time you remember an unpleasant experience, a disagreement, or having been falsely accused of something, discovering a lie, your conscious mind relives the incident as if it were occurring now. The conscious mind does not distinguish between reality and imagination. It knows only "now, this moment." Each time you experience thoughts and emotions whether positive or negative you are exchanging energy with someone else.

Psychic Attack may manifest in the form of body language, verbal abuse, taunting, unkind thoughts, wishing another per! son misf ortune, speaking maliciously to a supervisor about a co-worker.

Clearing the air is an expression which carries meaning in an entirely different way now that you are becoming more aware of energy within and around you. Be aware of your thoughts, release negative thoughts and emotions in ways which are compassionate to you and to others. What you think and feel manifests into physical form one way or another.

Exchanging energy in various situations, emotions, experiences, thoughts and with others is a part of the daily experience, a part of the journey. You can, if you so choose change or shift how you perceive all that is occurring in your life. You can, if you so choose allow compassion and forgiveness to release you from all that no longer serves your Higher Self.

Martha Rosenberg: Are You Spiritually Fit for the Holidays? Interview With Ingrid Mathieu, Ph.D.

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

Anonymous twelve-step programs have helped millions recover from addictions. Yet it is also possible to use the spiritual underpinnings of the programs to avoid addiction-related problems instead of dealing with them, says researcher and psychotherapist Ingrid Mathieu in her new book. We explored these topics in an interview.

2011-11-29-IngridMathieuHeadshot.jpg

Rosenberg: In your recently published book, Recovering Spirituality, you address the concept of spiritual bypass in which recovering people can use spiritual practices to sidestep emotional work. You write that because addicts are sensitive and lean toward "symptom relief," a recovering person may "use the program just as he used his drug of choice."

Mathieu: Yes, a lot of times addicts can expect great happiness, the proverbial "cash and prizes," after they get clean and sober and when it doesn't occur, they can attempt to flee from uncomfortable feelings via spiritual bypass. I write in Recovering Spirituality that rather than feeling like they are failures or not working their program correctly, the recovery experience should be reframed to include pain and feelings of being "stuck."

Rosenberg: Some of the people whose stories you recount in the book use prayer, meditation, chanting and service work to, as you put it, "check out from life." Others try to manipulate the outcomes of prayer or even their higher power.

Mathieu: Yes, prayer when it's fused with financial gain can become less about a connection with a higher power and more of an attempt to control. When using all of the tools in the program, I encourage people to discern if they are attempting to "check out" (fix, change, remove, ignore their issues) or to "check in" (be present to their issues and experiences).

Rosenberg: In other stories you recount, a person uses a ninth step amend to an old lover as a bid to rekindle romantic feelings, and another gets re-hooked on smoking. Is getting addicted to another things, "changing rooms on the Titanic" as it is often called, part of the spiritual bypass?

Mathieu: I don't want to create the message that if you are working your program the "right way," you won't experience blind spots in your step-work, or that you won't use food or another substance to some degree. We can't avoid these things entirely and sometimes we need some "defending." Defenses, like spiritual bypass or using other things to fill the void, can be both adaptive and maladaptive. In other words, defenses aren't all bad, and they can sometimes have a positive outcome. They can cause us to hit another bottom, which invites us to look at some of our original reasons for drinking and drugging. Recovery is a perpetual process of peeling back layers of the onion.

Rosenberg: You give some examples in the book of how sponsorship advice can be too general and might foster spiritual bypass. For example, in one story, a woman who has ceased to like her home group is told by her sponsor to "pray about it" or perhaps, "call another alcoholic." What would be better advice?

Mathieu: Many people that I have interviewed or worked with in recovery have felt like "blanket solutions" that are offered do not always meet them where they are, or don't leave room to feel their feelings. Perhaps the sponsor could ask if the person has shared the uncomfortable feelings in the meeting itself, which would open both the person and others to explore the difficulty. Also, the sponsor can remind the person that it is okay to tolerate some discomfort. The "solution" can sometimes be to allow for the experience of pain, rather than attempting to get rid of it.

Rosenberg: How do recovering people know if a spiritual practice that feels uncomfortable is correct and necessary or if it's the mark of a spiritual bypass?

Mathieu: Well, much of my research made it abundantly clear that there are at least two sides to every story. Sometimes, acting "as if" is a powerful solution. For example, acting as if you don't want to drink will garner another sober day. Other times, acting "as if" is an attempt to overcome the essence of who you are. You can act as if you do not have your personal history, or any feelings about it, but acting this way does not erase your truth. Behavioral techniques such as "fake it till you make it" can be useful bridges between old behavior patterns and new ways of being, but they do not turn you into an entirely different person. I think the best guideline is for recovering people to trust their own process. I often encourage people to get curious about their experience, to ask themselves how something is -- or is not -- working for them; to become a witness to their own journey. This can lead to the other tenet of recovery: "To thine own self be true."

Rosenberg: What book are you working on as a follow-up to Recovering Spirituality?

Mathieu: My original intention of the research into spiritual bypass in recovery was to investigate the potential pitfalls. I have come out the other side with a deep appreciation for the human condition and more awareness that there is no finish line in recovery. We can't entirely avoid "mistakes" or "pitfalls." I have written about these findings in Recovering Spirituality, and would like to extend these ideas -- in the hope that we can give ourselves permission to be flawed and fallible, and to bring more compassion to what are sometimes rather challenging growing pains, that will inevitably be experienced over and over again.

"Recovering Spirituality: Achieving Emotional Sobriety in Your Spiritual Practice," by Ingrid Mathieu, Ph.D., is available in e-book and paperback format from Hazelden Publishing.

Rejuvinate your body and mind with "Astral projection"

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

Article by Vinay Kumar

We are in a fast paced world now – where we eat in a hurry, sleep in a hurry, and wake up in a hurry and rush to work in a hurry. Amidst all this frenzy, little do we care about our physical well being and mental well being? Like they say the face is the index of the mind, we fail to understand that our aging and dull faces just mean that our mind is tired. Only when our own doctors and physicians tell us to get on to some relaxation techniques, do we realize that we have been ignoring the most important organ of our body – the mind.

Astral project is one such mind relaxation technique which gives you an out of the world experience, transforming you into a rejuvenated and highly energetic person. If you are new to this subject and wondering what astral projection is all about – let me explain then. You are mind traverses so many different places when you are just where you are. For example, you might be sitting in your own drawing room in the hot summer, but your mind could be roaming around in the cold, snow peaked Alps. The result is that you feel so nice and calm deep down and you are not bothered about the heat or the humidity that surrounds you. This is precisely what astral projection is all about.

If you want to try this out, you are at the right place. Here we provide you easy ways to astral project yourself and feel the bliss of your life. This has proven results even for new joiners as you can easily transform yourself to a different place in spite of the lack of experience. When you are able to experience this in the very first or second go, you feel encouraged and enthusiastic to try this all over again and the more times you try the better you feel. There are a lot of people whom I personally know who have tried this and have felt the world about their experiences. Sam, my colleague and close friend, said he wanted to try something like yoga or meditation as he had a tough time both at work and at home. That is when I told him to try this site for astral projection. ! He enter ed into it with lot of skepticism and doubt if he could really do it. That was the only time he doubted it. Once he was into it, there was absolutely no looking back for him. He said he felt like a new person and that he could manage all his problems.

I am sure you are also burdened with so many of these irritations in life – no I don't mean to say that you need to go through them. All I am trying to let you know is that you don't have to endure so much of this pain and agony when there is an easy way – astral projection that can transform you to an all new planet!

Government drafts 'happiness indicators' to supplement economic data

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011

The Cabinet Office unveiled on Monday a set of indicators designed to measure public happiness to complement government economic statistics.

Announced at the opening of an Asia-Pacific forum on well-being held in Tokyo, the statistics are designed to gauge happiness based on three major factors — socioeconomic conditions, physical and mental health, and relationships.

The 132 indicators concern objective circumstances, such as poverty and parenting leave, as well as such subjective areas as sense of trust in others and radiation worries.

One indicator reflects environmental activities by households and companies, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to fight global warming.

The Asia-Pacific Conference on Measuring Well-Being and Fostering the Progress of Societies, organized by the Cabinet Office's Economic and Social Research Institute, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development as well as other bodies, runs through Tuesday.

The Cabinet Office refrained from compiling the indicators into a single integrated set, saying doing so would only conceal the features of each sphere of happiness.

Among other countries, Bhutan is known for its gross national happiness index and France is considering developing one of its own.

Measuring well-being and progress is a key priority for the OECD, which says it has been looking for almost a decade beyond economic functions to the diverse experiences and living conditions of people and households.
