    In the first article in this three-part series, we looked at how mindfulness meditation fails to recognize the awesome potential of the mind to create better personal realities, including material abundance. In this article, we will see how one prominent New Age thinker took the next step - a step which acknowledges personal power yet includes the mindfulness-based focus on present-moment conditions. While this may not be the ultimate creative technique, it has helped a lot of people - and might help you, too!

    You Can Have It All

    One of the most influential figures in the New Age movement has been Arnold Patent, a former attorney who started to look for a different kind of laws - the laws of the universe - when he realized how unhappy and unhealthy he was. His groundbreaking book, You Can Have It All, provides an excellent overview of the main tenets of New Age thought, especially the central concept that everything in the universe is energy and that we are all connected to everything else in the universe. This notion of oneness is both spiritually exciting (though it is actually perceived as a threat by most major religions) and potentially empowering, because it is the foundation underpinning our personal power. When everything is energy, our thoughts and emotions are no longer mere mental constructs used to describe or relate to a separate, physical realm; on the contrary, they are the actual building blocks of our reality.

    While this recognition of the power of thought was a step beyond Buddhist mindfulness practices, Patent's book contained much that would be familiar to mindfulness practitioners. In particular, there is an emphasis on non-judgmental acceptance of ourselves and of others. But for our purposes, the interesting aspect of Patent's thinking is how his application of the creative principle ends up looking a lot like Rick Hanson's mindfulness exercises.

    Wanting Versus Having

    Patent's version of cause and effect, like many New Age thinker! s before and since, stressed the role of our beliefs in creating our own realities. His particular phraseology stressed that what you focus your attention on expands. As we shall see in the final part of this series, that advice has been taken by many self-help authors to mean that you should focus on the things you want. But Patent came to a different conclusion: his advice was to think about what you have. In his interpretation, thinking about what you want actually reinforces the idea of "not having" - of scarcity. If, instead, you think about all the things you already have, you are reinforcing a feeling of abundance.

    This takes Rick Hanson's mindfulness exercises and supercharges them, recognizing the power of thought that mindfulness practitioners don't. It also resonates with the "attitude of gratitude" that figured quite prominently in Rhonda Byrne's The Secret, another powerful way of leveraging what you already have. Note, however, that just by talking about ways to make our existing situation blossom into something "better," we are implying that we do not have enough. Those little implications can have surprisingly large consequences.

    For many people, myself included, Patent's approach is not aggressive enough. It doesn't take the bull by the horns and really exploit the power that is available to us. But it does serve as an important cautionary note that we must be careful not to inadvertently focus on scarcity. And this danger is all too real when we are pushing hard, getting impatient, and wondering why life isn't changing the way we want it to. It is very easy to become depressed by a perceived lack of progress, and those feelings of failure and disappointment can undo all your good work in a heartbeat. That is something to bear in mind as we move on to the third part of this series, in which we will put the pedal to the metal.

    The subconscious mind "covers" about 88% of your mind; the other 12% is covered by the conscious mind. The subconscious part is responsible for storing your memory, habits, personality, self-image and beliefs. It also controls your bodily functions.

    Scientists have also identified four states of awareness that our brain goes through. The brain wave states can be measured by a sophisticated piece of medical equipment known as an electroencephalograph machine (E.E.G.). This machine measures the electrical activity taking place within the brain, and enables scientists to ascertain what level of awareness a subject has achieved.

    Medical science has proven that we must all spend a certain amount of time in the Alpha State each day to function properly.

    The alpha brain wave activity state is the state we are in during relaxation and quiet moments. During the alpha state, the brain wave activity slows down, the mind relaxes, the body unwinds, and we slip into a state of relaxation. It is here where our thoughts slow down until they become so light they begin to float. It is here that we are able to restore, re-energize and empower ourselves and harness the power of the subconscious mind to help create long-lasting change. Alpha state is the gateway, the entry point that leads into the subconscious.

    In the Alpha state, any suggestions given to us would pass straight into the subconscious mind.

    Through relaxation we enter a new state, a state of creativity, essential for your success. You can induce new thoughts and new beliefs to your subconscious. The subconscious mind never sleeps; it works 24/7, and receives any thought, regardless of its nature. It files, classifies and records every bit of information that comes from any of your 5 senses. It's a very efficient tool. It cannot determine right from wrong and it does not judge. Clinical researchers have found that it even doesn't know the difference between reality and something visualiz! ed in yo ur mind's eyes. So the more positive instructions you give it, the more positive results you will get.

    There are different types of beats or tones. We know some of them: binaural beats, isochronic tones and monaural tones.

    What strikes me about this definition is the expression "physical science" which discloses a particular kind of science which is selling materialism. In is not science, per se, which the O.E.D. defines this way:

    "The state or fact of knowing; knowledge or cognizance of something specified or implied; also, with wider reference, knowledge (more or less extensive) as a personal attribute."

    The object of any physical science must exist materially in order to be known. This is to say, a physical science's object must have location and shape in order for it to be known. This is different than living systems, or the same, having life, which falls into the spiritual.

    From the canon, we learn that the Buddha shows no positive interest in what exists materially since it is finite and ultimately, empty and illusory.     I learned that my mind was out to get me--or, at the very least, my mind was out to control me. I think that I was addicted to feeling bad. The main reward from negative thinking is low expectations of ourselves. If you think you're not worth much, you don't have to do much.

    Negative thinking or fear controlled my mind and therefore my emotions. I also have learned that feelings can't hurt me unless I hold on to them.

    A technique that can help retain your brain is autogenic thinking. Autogenic training is similar to self-hypnosis. One of the first techniques learned is to focus on your breath. Instead of just inhaling and exhaling, inhale deeply and then exhale in two stages. The focus on inhaling and exhaling is not only good for your body but it focus the mind on something productive. She established her belief in prosperity being available to everyone by teaching that the Bible teaching of "not serving God and Mammon" was right. This teaching meant not worshiping wealth but to always recognize who the Giver is.

    She was the first I knew who recognized that the brain works by the mental images we produce. She also believed in projected positive images to others so that they can prosper also. With prosperity thinking, you focus on what is and what can be added to the wealth you already possess. I think of it as pyramid. At the base of the pyramid, I have the love of the God of my understanding, my health, my husband, my dog, my loved ones, my business, my home, my computers, the Internet, my spiritual program, my experiences, my plants, the canals, etc.

    She also taught one of the spiritual laws I believe—giving away surplus to make room for new. When my cup is full, I have to empty it to get more. So it is with possessions, love, experiences, etc. I have to make room for the new.

In 1976, he left the utility company where he worked, and became an editor at a journal. In 1979, he moved to Montreal, where he became a probationary teacher. In 1986, he was authorized to become a Zen master by his teacher.

    Throughout his life, Dr. Low has been studying human nature, psychology, creativity, and spirituality; he has a vast knowledge of Western psychology. He provided spiritual and creative counseling for many years. He has given a number of interviews on radio and television, including the CBC. Albert Low is an author of 11! books, and a contributor to 3 other books. Most of his books can be found in English and French, and many can also be found in Spanish, Portuguese, German and other languages too.

And we cannot forget those with whom we work and play. Plus, we must include how we interacted with all those humanoids and environments.

    In other words, we are the exact sum total of everyone we met, everything we did, everywhere we went, everything we learned, and everything we thought. And if some of us wish to get a very rude awakening of the type of individual we have become, all that is necessary is to stand back and take a long, hard, and thoughtful look at who are friends are.

    What do they do? Do they drink a lot? Do they read good books? Do they read anything at all? Do they curse a lot? Do they do it in public? Do they seem to have some morals and principles? Do we? If we do take a good look at our friends, and we are not happy with our results, then it is time to find new friends.

    As we are all aware, we have within ourselves the total power to control all that we say, do, and think... we can be any type of person we wish to be. We can transform our entire being through reading, writing of ourselves(self discovery), learning of what makes excellent moral character, and then incorporating it all into our everyday thoughts, words, and actions. Of course, by acting upon positive attributes, we cannot help but be an extremely positive influence upon all those with whom we co! me into contact with. And of natural course, we will attract good people who will be a great plus in our lives, and therefore enjoy our everyday lives even more.

    When we apply what it takes to condition ourselves to learn of ideals and actions that will transform us from a lowely state in our mental and physical worlds, we will soon begin to notice how very much we regenerating ourselves into a human being who is suddenly accomplishing that which we had no thought of completing before. By the very law of cause and effect, we will soon control almost all that is around us...our attitudes will become positive, we will soon improve upon our everyday lives, we will soon discover that much of the stress and depression in our lives are no longer an influence.

    As we are all motivated by that which we fear, and that which makes us happy, we will one day awaken to find that all of our fears are slowly disappearing into the misty diminsion of foreverness, and that our everyday happiness increases in direct proportion to the improvement of our attitude, and our positive learning. As an added advantage, we soon realize that our confidence in oursleves is greatly increasing, and that there is a bright light at the end of every dark tunnel.

    If we face some chore that has to be faced, and we just seem to know that it is going to be an un-pleasant experience, then we need to change our attitude towards it. And altering our attitude is not near as hard as you may believe.

    For instance; we wake up in the morning, and while we are stretching, we think to ourselves: "I cannot believe I have to go to work on such a lovely day...dang, I hate that!" Of course we have already convinced ourselves that we are going to have a terrible day. Why not take the easy way to change our mind?

    So we ask ourselves, what do we do when we "play"? We use our muscles, talk, walk, converse with others, think, look, feel, sometimes we are glad, and sometimes we are mad. Isn't that the same things we do when we "work"?! Of cour se it is! Now, we go inside our head, look up the word "drudgery," scroll down to the word "work," click on it and drag it over to, and under, the word "happiness." Now we say to ourselves when we first wake up: "Oh man, what a beautiful day! And the really neat thing about today is that I get to go to work, have lots of fun, and even get paid to do it."

Our brains are going to consider work something we hate only if we tell it so. If we keep telling ourselves over and over that "work" is "play", then the mind will eventually consider that as reality, and our attitude will change.

    High Blood Sugar Seems to Invite Colon Cancer

    Elevated blood sugar levels may increase women's risk of developing colon cancer, a new study suggests.

    Of the postmenopausal women who were studied, those with the highest blood sugar levels were nearly twice as likely to develop cancer of the colon or rectum over a 12-year period as women with the lowest levels. None of the study subjects had sugar levels high enough to classify them as diabetic.

    The findings may explain why obesity, which often goes hand-in-hand with high blood sugar, also raises a person's risk factor of colorectal cancer, the researchers said.

    The study highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, eating a good diet and getting exercise, all of which lower the risk of colorectal cancer, said study researcher Geoffrey Kabat, an epidemiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

    The study was published online today (Nov. 29) in the British Journal of Cancer.

    Colon cancer risk

    This year about 141,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 49,000 will die of it, the National Cancer Institute has projected.

    Previous studies examined the effects of high blood sugar and the hormone insulin on colorectal cancer risk, but results from these studies were inconsistent.

    Kabat and colleagues analyzed information from about 4,500 women ages 50 to 70 who were part of the Women's Health Initiative — a large study examining the most common causes of death and poor health in postmenopausal women. The new analysis focused on data gathered over 12 years, including the results of blood sugar level tests conducted several times during this period.

    Participants were divided into three groups based on their blood sugar levels at the start of the 12 years (high, middle and low). By the end of the study period, 81 women had developed colorectal cancer. Of these, 35 were from the "high" group, and 18 were from the "low."

    Those with consistently high blood sugar levels over time also were found to have an increased risk of colon cancer, the researchers said.

    How sugar may harm colon cells

    High levels of blood sugar, or glucose, may directly fuel the growth of cancer cells, or they could be a marker for other factors, such as increased levels of inflammation, that in turn increase the colon cancer risk, the researchers said.

    More studies are needed to find the exact way high blood sugar levels increase the risk of this cancer, Kabat said.

    No link was found between insulin levels and colorectal cancer risk.

    Utilize holistic defense in the justice system

    The Arkansas legal community should work to employ a fairly new concept in legal circles called holistic defense, the goal of which is to more directly combine the legal work of traditional public defenders' offices with improved access to social services — drug rehab, mental health counseling/therapy, educational/vocational training, etc. — that address the issues that send indigent citizens into the justice system. The idea was pioneered by a New York non-profit called The Bronx Defenders, whose model focuses on teams of lawyers, social workers, probation officers and others working, often side by side, with clients from arrest to the conclusion of legal proceedings to ensure that all needs of the client are met. In Arkansas, there are a lot of groups — from drug courts to veteran support organizations to social services — that are working toward the same goal, but not under the same roof. In a holistic justice system, a defendant could, for instance, get legal support in one room and meet with a drug or workforce counselor in another, instead of being referred from one agency to another and so on, possibly missing an important link along the way due to scheduling or transportation problems.

    Other holistic defense programs have been set up through a combination of private attorneys working pro bono with students from legal clinics or through public defenders' offices. Regardless of the organizational structure, embracing the practice is sure to help us turn the corner on lowering the rate of recidivism.

    Rethink the Arkansas Highway Commission

    Change the name of the Arkansas Highway Commission to the Arkansas Transportation Commission. Then send every commissioner, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department director, and their families on a month-long, all-expenses-paid, first-class worldwide learning expedition. First, they should visit the Netherlands for a week to see how simple changes in infrastructure design can allow bikes to play a significant role in the transportation network. Then send them to France to ride the trains for a week, both the high speed TGV and the more traditional lines that crisscross the country. Next, take them to South America to experience true Bus Rapid Transit in Curitiba, Brazil, and Bogota, Colombia. Finally, the expedition should conclude its trip with a weeklong stay in Vancouver, British Columbia, to relax in a place that proves that cities can absolutely thrive with no freeways.

    Such a trip, if it leads to real change back on the ground in Arkansas, will be much cheaper for the people of this great state than just continuing with business as usual. It's time for our tax dollars to go toward building real choice and resiliency into our statewide transportation system instead of just leveraging billions of dollars of debt to continue building and expanding roads that we can't afford to maintain. Cars and highways will always play a significant part in our transportation system, but it's foolish to lock us into that one mode for all of our trips when it's cheaper, healthier, better for our economy and just more enjoyable to make walkable, bikeable places that are also served by convenient public transportation. The leaders at the newly renamed Arkansas Transportation Commission should focus on increasing freedom and choice rather than putting all of our eggs in one basket.

    Nothing is the heart of reality

    There's something fascinating about nothing.

    Yes, that's a paradox. Necessarily so, because "nothing" is an abstraction, an impossibility. If nothing actually existed, it wouldn't be nothing. And even if somehow there could be nothing, no one would know about it.

    A recent issue of New Scientist largely was devoted to exploring the nature of nothingness. In one page, physicist Brian Greene summarized the main themes in "Nothingness: why nothing matters."

    SHAKESPEARE had it right, even in ways he couldn't have imagined. For centuries, scientists have indeed been making much ado about nothing - and with good reason. Nothing, or rather what we've long taken to be nothing, may be the key to understanding everything from why particles have mass to the expansion of the universe. As explored in this special issue of New Scientist(see "The nature of nothingness"), nothing is a rich and subtle subject whose biography is far from finished.

    Every article in the special issue had some passages that made me think, "Wow, nothing really is something."

    For example, Richard Webb's description of how zero eventually became a core concept in mathematics included these insights:

    Greek thought was wedded to the idea that numbers expressed geometrical shapes; and what shape would correspond to something that wasn't there? It could only be the total absence of something, the void -- a concept that the dominant cosmology of the time had banished.

    ...Eastern philosophy, rooted in ideas of eternal cycles of creation and destruction, had no such qualms.

    ...Brahmagupta was the first person we see treating numbers as purely abstract quantities separate from any physical or geometrical reality.

    ...The result was a continuous number line stretching as far as you could see in both directions, showing both positive and negative numbers. Sitting in the middle of this line, a distinct point along it at the threshold between the positive and negative worlds, was sunya, the nothingness. Indian mathematics had dared to look into the void -- and a new number had emerged.

    In the next article, mathematician Ian Stewart taught me a lot more about set theory than I'd known before (of course, starting at zero, essentially, I could only go up).

    Already I've managed to work this empty paper bag explanation of how set theory defines numbers into a conversation. Try doing that yourself. You're virtually guaranteed to stop the conversation in its tracks because nobody will know what you're talking about, including yourself. Fun!

    Zero is a number, the basis of our entire number system. So it ought to count the members of a set. Which set? Well, it has to be a set with no members... the empty set. It is unique, because all empty sets have exactly the same members: none... We can define the number 0 as the empty set.

    What about the number 1? Intuitively, we need a set with exactly one member. Something unique. Well, the empty set is unique. So we define 1 to be the set whose only member is the empty set... This is not the same as the empty set, because it has one member, whereas the empty set has none. Agreed, that member happens to be the empty set, but there is one of it.

    Think of a set as a paper bag containing its members. The empty set is an empty paper bag. The set whose only member is the empty set is a paper bag containing an empty paper bag. Which is different: it's got a bag in it.

    The key step is to define the number 2. We need a uniquely defined set with two members. So why not use the only two sets we've mentioned so far: [0, the empty paper bag set, and 1, the paper bag containing the empty paper bag set]

    You can probably guess what 3 is. A paper bag containing 0, 1, and 2. So every number is based on nothing, an "empty paper bag." Mathematics, which so accurately describes reality through the laws of physics, is founded on nothing. So says a sidebar in the article.

    The empty set has no members, as an empty paper bag contains nothing. It can be used to define numbers uniquely by forming other sets from the empty set.

    Likewise, a New Scientist video at the top of this page shows how there is no such thing as "nothing." Take all of the particles out of a box, or the universe. There still will be energy in (or as) this supposedly empty space.

    In "The Physics of Nothing; The Philosophy of Everything," Ethan Siegel lays out in words and pictures how the cosmos evolved from nothing. No God required. No creator required.

    By the time we arrive at today, we've obtained the Universe we currently exist in. We started from literally nothing; from empty spacetime containing solely the energy of the quantum vacuum, and have arrived at our Universe today, with its billions of galaxies, stars, and all that ever was or will be here on Earth.

    So if we feel a need to worship something, that should be nothing. (A Google search of "nothingness" on my two blogs shows that I've done a lot of wordful worshipping of this elusive non-entity. Such as here, here, here, and here.)

    Plus Alpha is a weekly column that explores life in Japan from the perspective of American expatriate and game-industry veteran Jarik Sikat. Having worked in numerous areas of the game industry since 1994, Sikat relocated to Japan in 2010.

    My journey on the road to enlightenment began on April 1, 2010 – April Fools' Day. Exactly one month later, I'd be moving to Japan for what I hoped would be for good. Despite living out of a 300-square-foot studio apartment, I still managed to accumulate a great deal of "stuff;" my car, a ukulele, my surfboard, a G4 folding "gamer chair," action figures, and of course my entire collection of videogames. Considering outrageous shipping costs and airline excess baggage fees, not to mention the size of my new apartment, there was no way I could possibly bring it all with me.

    Several months beforehand, I started this whole Zen Buddhist kick. For better or worse, I decided to use this moving experience as one big exercise in detachment. Thanks to craigslist, the car, ukulele, CDs, DVDs and a 42" HDTV were all purged and sold. Though I'd be taking a snowboard, my surfboard was left in the custody of a friend. So what about all those games?

    All the games I ever owned were sold.

    Obscure PSOne imports like The Bombing Islands and Tondemo Crisis, my favorite PS2 games (including Fatal Frame 2 and Romance of the Three Kingdoms X), a Bandai Wonderswan handheld, a PSP, plus all of my PS2, PS3 and 360 games… sold. Well, not everything. Uncharted 2, Shaun White Snowboarding, Railfan (a train driving simulator), and a Nintendo DS lite made the trip.

    Faced with the reality of a tight budget and hardly any games to play, I went on a PlayStation Store demo-download binge. My football season consisted of the Colts playing the Jets every week, and Pacquiao's only rival was Miguel Cotto. I did purchase a few games, like Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, but was banned from playing when I smashed a controller and inadvertently taught the upstairs neighbors new ways to use the f-bomb in an impromptu late-night English class.

    Why not just buy games in Japan, like everyone else?

    At Costco, I picked up Demon's Souls for 3,800 yen (about US$ 50 at the time) and that was the reduced price for a "the Best" game, Sony Japan's equivalent of a "Greatest Hits" title. Newer releases such as Final Fantasy XIII-2 would set me back 7,280 yen (US$ 100), and I don't want to eat cup ramen every day. After I began freelancing for PlayStation: The Official Magazine, I had some extra cash, but with the yen at an all-time high, new games were still pretty much out of the question. So began the next stage of enlightenment: acceptance of the pre-owned.

    I once worked for a game publisher that vilified pre-owned games, but Michael Jordan owns the Charlotte Bobcats now, and it's an entirely different story.

    If you're visiting Japan and searching for games, you'll most likely head to Akihabara. At some of the larger electronics stores, like Labi in Shibuya, you'll also find a selection of used games. In my case, closer to home there are a few game resellers, but prices can vary greatly.

    Over at Get Game & Recycle, which had the widest selection of used releases ranging from 8-bit to current generation, Namco Bandai's Tales of Xillia was 4,480 yen used (retail price: 8,379 yen). Battlefield 3 (PS3) was just 4,980 for a used copy. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PS3) was priced at 7,980 yen new, although even used, it's still a little high at 6,780 (though selling a copy could fetch you 5,300 yen). Get Game & Recycle deals in buying and selling pre-owned games exclusively, but this location for some reason seems to do brisk business in used clothing, too.

    The awesomely ever-present Book Off stores specialize in used media, ranging from manga and anime to game software and hardware, and of course books. Selection naturally varies by location. At one shop, Tales of Xillia was spotted for 4,980 yen. Battlefield 3 (360) was tagged at 5,950.

    Tsutaya is a nationwide chain specializing in movie and music rentals; some locations actually rent manga as well. Their larger shops sell new movies, music and games among other items. The used game selection varies by store; at the Tsutaya closest to me, a pre-owned copy of Tales of Xillia was a bit steep at 6,480 yen.

    To be honest, it's really not that bad. I head out to game centers more often, and prior to this year's Tokyo Game Show, I got six hours of hands on time with Final Fantasy XIII-2. Still, even with newer pre-owned titles approaching US$ 100, it's best to wait to a few months for prices to come down. How does one cope?
