Nobel Peace laureate and Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi was recently delivered the Wallenberg Medal by The University of Michigan via Dominic Nardi, an honor she received back in 2011 (but could not then receive in person). According to this article, "Nardi was one of the best candidates to deliver the Wallenberg medal to Suu Kyi because Burma, also known as Myanmar, is one of his research interests." The article covers the delivery and their meeting in-depth.

Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat who helped rescue tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest toward the end of World War II.

The Wallenberg Medal and Lecture website: "Undaunted and fearless through many years of detention and efforts to intimidate her, in speaking out for democracy and human rights in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi exemplifies the courage and commitment to the humanitarian values of Raoul Wallenberg."

Read all about the history of the Medal here. Past recipients include the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Watch this prerecorded lecture from 2011, played at The 21st Annual Raoul Wallenberg Lecture, followed by a then-live Q&A session with Aung San Suu Kyi:

Pema Chödrön on what happens when we “drop the story line”

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 08:00 AM PST

"If we begin to surrender to ourselves — begin to drop the story line and experience what all this messy stuff behind the story line feels like — we begin to find bodhichitta, the tenderness that's underneath all the harshness. By being kind to ourselves, we become kind to others. By being kind to others — if it's done properly, with proper understanding — we benefit as well.

"So the first point is that we are completely interrelated. What you do to others, you do to yourself. What you do to yourself, you do to others." — Pema Chödrön, from her book Start Where You Are, via Heart Advice.

Norman's Chair #still4amo

STUDIO_CHAIR2.jpg
Studio chair, Normans chair

I can picture him working away in his art studio all day then, realizing it's 5.00 pm, brushes himself off and is still for a moment or two. Then resuming work on what ever it is he is doing.

Having a place and a chair, familiar and comfortable, are no small gifts. Many do not have that.

Thanks Norman for the photograph which I tinkered with a bit. Came out nicely I think.

Chinese forces fire on thousands of protesting Tibetans

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 12:00 PM PST

Reuters brings us the news that the Tibetan advocacy groups Free Tibet and the International Campaign for Tibet, working with unnamed sources within Tibet, are now reporting that between one and three Tibetans have been killed, many more wounded, and thousands more fired upon by police in Sichuan province yesterday.

The Tibetans were demonstrating in front of Chinese government offices in Luhuo (near Chengdu) in protest of "arrests earlier in the day in connection with the distribution of pamphlets carrying the slogan 'Tibet Needs Freedom' and declaring that more Tibetans were ready to stage self-immolations to challenge Chinese rule."

The Los Angeles Times notes that the incident almost immediately follows the publication of Human Rights Watch's 2012 World Report, which was highly critical of the China's government's repression of Tibetans and other ethnic minorities. (The New York Times reports on China's own account of the incident here.)

Posted: 24 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

Gil Fronsdal of the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, California, may be known to many as a Buddhist teacher, but he's naturally interested in the growing mindfulness movement; that is, mindfulness as it we see it, more and more, in secular society. Here he shares his thoughts about what it means when this powerful practice is brought into all the realms of our modern lives, including education, parenting, medicine, mental health, business, sports, prisons, and conflict resolution.

For much more, see Mindful.org's "Mindful Society" page, which focuses on the latest developments on how people are working to move our society in the direction of greater mindfulness, awareness, and caring for each other.
