ABSTRACT: The Shamarpas (zhva dmar pa), or Red Hat Lamas, are the second-oldest reincarnate lineage in Tibet and among the highest ranked hierarchs of the Kagyu School. In earlier times, the Shamarpas were renowned for their contributions to poetry, philosophy, political mediation, and for the establishment and maintenance of monasteries.  The events surrounding the life of the 10th Shamarpa, Chodrup Gyatso (1742-1792) mark a dramatic shift in that perception, one that led to a 171-year long ban on his reincarnation. This paper studies the life and death of this now infamous figure from Tibet's past in light of the diary of the 18th century Tibetan politician Tenzin Peljor Doringpa (bstan 'dzin dpal 'byor rdo ring pa), suggests that there are many ways to interpret the life and death of this renegade Rinpoche, and much to be learned from how his story has been remembered.

"Just when I most identified myself as a Buddhist," writes Stephen Schettini – author of The Novice: Why I Became a Buddhist Monk, Why I Quit, and What I Learned — in the Winter 2011 Buddhadharma magazine, "I behaved least like a follower of the Buddha."

In addition to browsing that issue of the magazine, you can also read Schettini's full article, "Why I'm Not a Buddhist" in its entirety, online. Just click here.

Growth in the offing for New Jersey Buddhist Vihara?

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 12:00 PM PST

The 30-foot Samadhi Buddha statue

The New Jersey Buddhist Vihara, home to the largest Samadhi Buddha statue in the Western world, is looking to expand its facilities. The building project, dubbed the New Jersey Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Centre Project, has been planned since the construction of the 30-foot Samadhi statue in 2009.

According to a monk at the Vihara, plans for expansion include a "large prayer and meditation room for the colder months, a library, facilities for the dharma school to meet, a conference room, living quarters for the six monks, and a meditation trail."

The projected bill for this is substantial, totaling approximately $ 2.3 million dollars in renovation and construction costs. The temple hopes to have design plans ready soon so that they can present them to their township for approval. If approved, they will commence building immediately and would like to see construction completed by March of this year.

You can download a PowerPoint presentation about the plans by clicking here.

Bench Vancouver, BC Canada

and bench Seattle, Washington USA

It seem that winter has reached the west coast of Canada and the US. I believe it is quite unusually for there to be snow in Seattle and Vancouver, but here is poof that they have it. Lovely benches too and thank you to you two #still4amo participants for them.

My afternoon has had me multi tasking right up to 5.00 pm. However when the moment came I just stopped what I was doing. That's emailing back and forth with somebody and messaging back and forth with another somebody while worrying I'd lost a years worth of data. I did set the Online Timer which is a really helpful tool to use. One minute goes SO quickly.

Anybody who imagins a monks life is removed from the hurly burly of daily life, is mistaken. (At least for today anyway.) Anybodies life is engaged with what's there. Sometimes what's there is... a lot at once.

And there is snow on the hill tops around where I am.
