A scandal we missed in 2011

Back in 2011, Peter Sbaraglia was running a Ponzi scheme in Toronto in which SGI Canada was caught up, unbeknownst to them at the time. It turns out Sbaraglia was an ardent supporter of this Canadian Nichiren organization and gave them more than $ 320 thousand  in donations over the period of a few years. When his scheme fell apart and he was exposed in 2011, SGI Canada was put in the awkward position of having to decide what to do. They decided to return the money. The story was complicated by the mysterious death of Mr. Sbaraglia in his home (in Flamborough, Ontario), and infighting amongst disaffected SGI members. The Globe and Mail ranked it as one of the top scandals of 2011.

January 3rd 2012

Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, 3 January 2012 (Tendar Tsering, phayul.com) - Speaking exclusively to an audience of Tibetans, Chinese, and people from the Himalayan region attending the Kalachakra, Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama noted that the understanding of the Tibetan issue as well as sympathy towards Tibetans among Chinese in mainland China is growing.

"I have been meeting Chinese scholars, students, and various representatives of organisations in the last many years and there is a growing understanding of the Tibetan issue and a growing interest in Tibetan Buddhist among the mainland Chinese," the Dalai Lama said earlier today in Bodh Gaya.

"I have heard that there are around three million Buddhists in China and that the number is increasing," the 76-year old Tibetan leader who devolved all his political authority to the elected Tibetan leadership last year said.

"There are some Chinese leaders, who, without realising the importance of the Buddha Dharma and without proper knowledge of the Tibetan history look down at the Tibetan issue."

Purposely walking down from his seat to the side where his Chinese disciples were seated, the Tibetan spiritual leader noted that China, with its largest population in the world, would do a great service to the entire humanity if they focused of nurturing love and compassion by practicing the teachings of Lord Buddha.

"The 1.3 billion Chinese people have every right to know the facts and with your ancient tradition and wisdom, every Chinese has the capacity to analyse what is wrong and what is right," the Dalai Lama said.

Consoling the Tibetans from Tibet present in the audience, the Tibetan leader encouraged them to be "happy" and to "espouse the Tibetan spirit" in the face of Chinese brutality.

"The problem is big, it's not a small one. But be happy and focus on children's education," the Dalai Lama, who has been in exile since 1959 said.

"To achieve a greater goal, one has to be patient. It takes time."

After the special audience, when asked how the Chinese view the Dalai Lama's Middle-way Approach for a negotiated settlement with the Chinese government, Shan Shi Chu, a Chinese from mainland China admitted to Phayul that she doesn't know much about "politics". However, the Chinese pilgrim said she felt "great" to see the Dalai Lama in person.

Signaling that there are thousands of Chinese longing to see the Dalai Lama, Chu reveled, 'I was waiting for this chance for a very, very long time".

The Dalai Lama begins ten-day Kalachakra teachings

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

January 2nd 2012

Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India, 2 January 2012 (byTendar Tsering, phayul.com) - Amidst a light rainfall, Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama began his ten-day Kalachakra teachings yesterday in Bodh Gaya.

Thousands of pilgrims from Tibet, the Himalayan regions, Bhutan, Korea, China, and from the west sat under tents covering the large grounds to listen to the Dalai Lama.

The 76-year old Tibetan leader began by thanking the large gathering for making the journey to receive his teachings with a special mention of the huge number of Tibetans from Tibet.

"This place is a very holy place as the Buddha was enlightened here and those of you Tibetans who have come from Tibet despite lots of hardships, you all are among my special devotees for this Kalachakra," the Dalai Lama said.

Asking all the Chinese pilgrims to raise their hands, the Tibetan spiritual leader acknowledged their attendance while urging all his devotees to practice his teachings based on reasons and not on "blind faith".

"Lots of Chinese from different countries have come including from Singapore and Thailand, and even from mainland China. Unfortunately nowadays, some conservative Chinese leaders consider Buddhist as sort of anti-China," the Dalai Lama said.

Wishing his disciples from the US and Europe a 'Happy New Year', the Dalai Lama began his Kalachakra teachings for a record 32nd time since he first gave the initiations in May 1954 in Lhasa, Tibet.

Though an official figure is yet to be announced, observers believe the teachings have drawn the largest crowd ever of Tibetans.

The light rainfall which started earlier in the morning and ended along with the Dalai Lama's teaching for the day has caused inconveniences to all the pilgrims, especially those staying in rented tents.

But there were little complaints from the large crowd, as Tibetans believe a rainfall at the beginning of a religious teaching is auspicious and considered a blessing.
