Yamantaka // Sonic Titan are a music collective from Montreal. They bill themselves as a Black Metal band. The two leads, Alaska B and Ruby Atwood, identify themselves as practicing Buddhists. Here's a recent article about them: http://www.avclub.com/toronto/articles/alaska-b-and-ruby-atwood-of-yamantaka-sonic-titan,68404/

Speaking of Buddhist Metal (?), don't forget Affinity in Toronto, with Sean Hillman on drums. Sean is a former Gelugpa monk, currently a Buddhist scholar at the University of Toronto, and publisher of the blog, http://www.torontobuddhistethics.blogspot.com/. Alan Watts - The Religion of No Religion

For over 40 years Alan Watts was the foremost interpreter of Eastern philosophy. He was instrumental in introducing Taoism, Buddhism and Zen to a Western audience in the 1950s and 60s. He was the author of more than 20 books and is one of the most widely read Philosophers of the 20th century. He was also a very highly regarded public speaker, renowned for his extraordinary intellect and wit. Alan Watts was a man ahead of his time and this is proved by the fact that his insights are still relevant today, more than 30 years after his death. Watts was an autodidact (self educated) and had extensive knowledge in a diverse number of fields. His books and lectures often touched upon cosmology, quantum mechanics, physics, mathematics, ecology, psychology, biology, technology, art and literature. He also didn't limit himself to only Eastern philosophy. He also had a remarkable knowledge of all the world's major religions and philosophies. Watts was awarded an honorary doctorate for his work on comparative religion. He also had a good understanding of many European and Asian languages, including Chinese calligraphy. The thing that most endeared Alan Watts to his audiences was his humour and humility. His lectures were often punctuated with poetry and readings from the ancient sages. His audiences often alternated from spontaneous laughter to astonishment when Watts delivered one of his amazing insights. Although many viewed Watts as a guru, he was adamant that he wasn't. He once ...

with Jean-Claude van Itallie, Parlan McGaw and Rae C Wright

Friday – Sunday Feb. 3 – 5

Join us for a special weekend arts and meditation retreat.

In the belief that acting training is also training in being a human being, we'll examine how meditation helps us connect with our creativity and cultivate the mental focus, physical freedom, emotional range, and spontaneity that make for vibrant acting and vibrant living. This retreat a potentially transformational investigation of the process of "acting" meditation as we move through the world.

The IDP has invited renowned playwright and acting teacher Jean-Claude van Itallie to co-lead this workshop with Parlan McGaw, actor and meditation teacher, and Rae C Wright, actor, writer, and teacher. The workshop will include meditation instruction and practice, sensation & awareness exercises, contemplation exercises and improvisation — all designed to help us open the heart and deepen emotional authenticity, develop stronger presence and confidence, and strengthen our intuitive connections.

Open to all, from professional performer and avid meditator to those just beginning to explore new horizons.

Workshop Schedule

Saturday Feb. 4th: 10am-6pm

Jean-Claude van Itallie was a seminal force in the New York Off-Broadway theater of the sixties. His "America Hurrah" is considered the watershed anti-Viet Nam war play. His translations of Chekhov's major plays are produced around the country. In 2000 van Itallie performed his one-man show, "War Sex and Dreams." A student of Trungpa Rinpoche since 1968, van Itallie wrote the play, "Tibetan Book of the Dead," and is currently co-writing the opera libretto of "MILA, Great Sorcerer," about the life ofMilarepa. An inspired teacher of play writing and performance, van Itallie has transformed the old farm in Western Massachusetts where he lives into ShantigarFoundation for theater, meditation, and healing. Shantigar was given its name by Trungpa Rinpoche who did a year's retreat there while writing Shambhala teachings.

Parlan McGaw has been helping others to explore the creative interplay between acting and meditation since 2005, when he codirected the first of two weeklong retreats for actors with master teacher Michael Howard at Karme Choling Meditation Center in Vermont. He has since taught meditation programs for actors at Villanova University, the Michael Chekhov Acting Studio, and the Michael Howard Studios in New York, as well as at Shantigar with Jean-Claude van Itallie and Rae C Wright. A meditation instructor in the Shambhala tradition, Parlan has acted with the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Old Globe Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, and other theatres in New York and regionally, and he made his film debut in Todd Haynes's Poison. www.MeditationforActors.com

Most recently Rae C Wright was understudy for the Hannah Pitt line of characters in the Signature Theatre production of "Angels in America". She's the recipient of anOBIE Award for Sustained Excellence in the Theatre for her work with the NYStreetTheatre Caravan, was a 2010 Fulbright Teaching Fellow, and is a Professor in NYU's Film&TV Department where she teaches acting to film directors. She has both directed and performed at The Public Theatre and worked regionally at ATLouisville, Triad State, Portland Stage Co., etc. She recently played Bernie Madoff at PS122 in a Circus Amok extravaganza, and is featured in Madeline Olnek's short "Countertransference" which won honors at Sundance 2009. She's author of Vicki Weaver & I…a comedy about hate; The Moon in Vain, (a 'fifth act' to The Seagull), She's Just Away!-"a comedy about grieving"; and Animal Instincts!
