Tibet saw three new self-immolation protests this weekend. On Friday, a monk and a layperson set themselves afire near Kirti Monastery in eastern Tibet. Both men are feared dead. Saturday, the Central Tibet Administration put out the following statement regarding the incident:

"The latest incidents, which occurred on January 6, 2012, involve one monk and one layperson, with the latter reportedly having succumbed to his injuries."

On Sunday another monk, Sonam Wangyal, self-immolated and died of his injuries in the town of Dharlag in Golok county. According to Tibet Post International, "…he climbed a local hill, burned incense, prayed, and later distributed many leaflets in which he wrote that he was going to perform a deadly act for Tibet and the happiness of Tibetan people. He also said he was doing so to commemorate all the Tibetans who have died since 2009 for the restoration of freedom in Tibet and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama."

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, incidentally, does not support the self-immolation protests that have been happening in Tibet. In a recent BBC interview, His Holiness said: "There is courage—very strong courage. But how much effect? Courage alone is no substitute. You must utilize your wisdom." The Karmapa has also recently urged for an end to the self-immolation phenomena.

Tibetan Sky Burial

In the high mountains of Tibet, where trees don't grow, natural resources scarce, and the land is harsh, Tibetan Buddhists do not bury their dead, nor waste precious resources cremating the body. From dust to dust, flesh to flesh, nothing is wasted. Human body flesh makes precious food for the vultures. Tibetan Buddhists feed their dead to the vultures. This is good karma.

In past posts, we've tracked the news of Hollywood's historic Bodhi Tree Bookstore
possible closing and revival. Sadly, Bodhi Tree closed its doors — originally, with no prospect of reopening of relocating — on December 31st. In new stories, both The Los Angeles Times and LA Weekly look back at what had been a mecca for hungry minds and the spiritually-inclined.

Hartside Top looking towards the Lake District

Time for a bit of colour on the page. This was taken just after new year on a morning when I wasn't sure I'd be able to get across the pennines via Hartside. As it happened there was hardly any snow and the view was clear. It was brisk though. Just a few miles away and coming my way were grey snow clouds dumping on the hill tops just north of the pass.

After getting caught up in a blizzard last year I'd promised myself I'd not attempt the Hartside route if there was any chance of snow. I broke my promise.
