Universal thusness

Not the usually samadhi referred to in the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Ornament Sutra) the Ocean Seal Samadhi (S., sgramudr samdhi) it is positively critical to the Hua-yen school. In this treatise Fa-tsang explain it as follows:

Ocean Seal is the strange note of loyal suchness. When all falsehood is extinguished the mind becomes transparent as well as still, so that the innumerable images equally appear in it. It is similar to the great sea on whose surface waves appear because of wind; when the breeze ceases, the H2O of the sea becomes transparent as well as still, so that there have been no images that have been not reflected in it (Cheng Chien, Manifestation of the Tathagata, p. 155).

Here is another explanation that adds the few more details.

"Seal" refers to the stamp of genuineness, additionally found for mudra, the pondering gesture or position. Thus, t hey have been incompetent to come in the Ocean Seal Samadhi that the Buddha was in when he delivered the Avatamsaka Sutra. The universe of waves is as well most with typical beings, in alternative words. But it doesnt have to be.

All beings can, if they set their mind to it, have this samadhi. It is positively the fantastic samadhithat all we see in the way of phenomena, including even the thoughts, is only the pattern of Mind or thusness. But wishing or imagining it were so will not have it so nor will intellectual understanding. Sitting in zazen engaged in nonthinking will not have it so either; or wearing robes, or chanting, or the thousand alternative supposed practices. In the way, these have been detours until we gain the courage to demeanour within for this thusness, the pristine substance of even the thoughts. It is positively present but not in the way we prognosticate it.
